MILITARY CADETS. ; < COLLEGE OPENS NEXT WEEK. i One' of tho events of Coronation Day '(June 22), will be tho opening of the {-Australian Military College at Duntroon, ['New ••'Souttt Wales, to 'rcceivo : ' the first jyear military cadets who are to train for ; futufo 1 appointment to the Australian fund New Zealand Staff Corps. Duntroon | College is situated on an area acquired I within the Federal territory at the Dunh'con Homestead, on tho right hank of the rMolonglo River, about'seven miles .from ; Queanbeyan, and nejir to" tho eastern i boundary of tho capital city area. The kite, which comprises an area of. about '370 acres, has a frontage to tho Aiolonglo ■River. and is at present held under lease i.by tho Commonwealth Government for a ; period of two years,, with the right of renewal for a similar term. Within twelve : miles of the college there is an additional .area of country, near the Murrumbidgee ! - Kiver, suitable for encampments, field firming, artillery practice, and so cv. The i "homestead at Duntroon has been convertfed into offices for the administrative staff, ; orderly rooms, and quarters and messI rooms for bachelor instructors. Tempor-' : nry barracks and mess accommodation j have been erected for tho cadets, classftoorns provided, and a parade ground laid iflut. ; Tho Military College, which, in accord- | nnco with Lord Kitchener's- recommenda- ■ tions, is to be conducted under-'a similar [ policy and with the same high ideals as ,'that which has made West Point Military ■'Academy (U.S;A.),-the most-admirable institution of its kind, has a military staff ; of two directors, and six instructors, a I civil staff of five professors' and two lecj turers, and an administrative staff consisting of tho adjutant, the quartermas''ter, and one medical officer, the whole Hunder the command of Brigadier-General ji-W. Ten New Zealand Cadets. • j- The establishment of cadet's at' the col- ■ lege lias been fixed at 150, but tho first • contingent will number forty-three only— I'thirty-three Australians, and ten New j. Of these t'ho following seven ■passed tho examination:— W. J. IC. Jennings (Canterbury), R. Miles (Canterbury). ! V. G. Jervis (Otago). C. Carrington (Canterbury), i W. N. 31. Weir (Wellington). ; D. ' ' I j Conditions and Discipline. As t.o the conditions on which the cadets ; are 'admitted to tho college, each candi- ■ date and his, parent or guardian is required to siga a form, in which the for- ; iner engages to serve in the permanent ; military forces of tlib Dominion for twelve ' years, unless' previously discharged, dismissed, removed, or his resignation duly i accepted, and also to certify his intention , that the candidate, if lie obtains'a cadetship, shall adopt the military service as : his profession for life. No fees will be : charged for equipment, instruction, of ;■ .maintenance of cadets, and their travel- ; ling expenses between their homes and j. the college will bo paid on first joining ; aad on graduation. An allowance, esti- ■ mated to cover the expenses of uniform, i jbooks, and instruments, messing, washI ring, and other contingencies will be adI j mitted as a charge against'the public, so llong as the cadet is borno on the books ; of the college.
