PAGEANT OF EMPIRE.
$ CAPTAIN COOK IN NEW ZEALAND. By Telesraph—Press Association—Copyrieht London, June 11. At the Festival of Empire the fourth part of tho pageant was a great success. It was devoted to overseas episodes, tho actors and actresses giving a representation of "Captain Cook's Landing,"- and the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. The display concluded with a "Masque Imperial." The spectacle was a brilliant one, and was greatly applauded. Tho pageant of London is one of tho central features of the Festival of Empire. A' committee of leading historians, with Sir Laurence Gomme, F.S.A., as chairman, has compiled a list of scenes which show the main current of the Empire's history. Upwards of 15,000 performers are taking part in tho pageant, which is under the personal direction of Mr. Frank Lascelles. The pageant is divided into four parts, and in all some twenty-nine incidents in Imperial history are to be depicted. From the place whenc? the spectators will view tho pageant not a house will bo visible—only the Crystal Palace gardens with their ornamental water in tho foreground, and in tho background away in tho distance beyond the trees the hills of Kent and Surrey. The grandstand, which will accommodate 10,000 spectators, has been built from designs by Sir Aston Webb, If.A., in tho form of an ancient Greek amphitheatre.
