MASTERTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Masterton, Juno 10. Special anniversary services are to be hold in tho Methodist Church to-morrow (Sunday), when sermons appropriate to tho occasion will bo preached by tho Rev. ; S. J. Serpell. Special music will also be rendered. The extended train service, under which a train will leave Masterton at 3.50 p.m. for Woodville, will commence on Monday next. At the monthly meeting of (ho Masterton Trust Lands Trustees last evening Mr. E. G. Eton was ejected chnirman for the ensuing year, in succession to Mr. T. Wagg. Tho trustees adopted tho recommendation of a sub-committee, that the Town Hall be lighted with electricity. It was decided to apply for the balance <n the loan (£1900) from ithe Wellington Earboard Board in sums of £30011 in September and £1300 in January. The secretary's salary was increased by £2G per year. The treasurer's report showed a credit at the bank of £158 lGs. 7d. Applications for grants from various educational institutions were deferred until the estimates ere under consideration. It was decided to place on record the services rendered to (ho trust by Mr. 11, C. Robinson. Mr. J. W. Poynton, of Wellington, was un.nblo to reach Masterton yesterday to deliver his promised lecture on "Microbes" before tho members of tho ICnox Musical and Literary Association. Tho manuscript of tho 'lecture and lantern slides were, however, sent, along, and those were used by Ihe Rev. A. T. Thompson to entertain and instruct quite a large audience. A vote of thanks was passed lo Mr. Poynton for the trouble ho had been put to in preparing, the lecture. Meetings of Native owners in respect of three blocks of Native land in tTiis district were held in Masterton yesterday, to consider offers of purchase inailo by' tho Government and private individuals. In each case (lie Natives considered (he price offered lo be 100 low, and no arrangement wa-s come to. Since the Old Ago Pension Act camo into operation, no fewer than 411 old-ago pensions have been issued in the Mastorton pension district. Of this number 174 nre at present in existence. The total amouni received by the Masterton Trust Lands Trustees last year in rentals was £2085. This was an increase of £400 on tho amount received in tlio previous year.
