At a public meeting of citizens in sym« patliy.with tho proposed Anglo-American Arbitration Treaty held this evening, motion was moved by Archdeacon Calder and supported by Mr. Pricliett, the American Consul-General, appealing to citizens and all interested in the welfare of -humanity to oncourago and strengthen the hands of those who are endeavouring to bring tho proposals to a successful issue. The point of this curious procedure lici in tho fact that Mr. Fricdlauder is an opponent of the Sumner Canal scheme, and as fresh elections have been ordered in several districts it is impossible as yet to say whether a majority of tins members be for or against tho canal. The union secretary explains that some young unmarried mpu joined tho union in tho morning and wero put on, two old members, capable workers, being left out. This is supposed'to be duo to these men being prominent; in the union. The men resented it, and all ceased work. After some deputationising the S.S. and A. Company's manager' put oil the two men in addition, and ; work was resumed. The men aro said to havo been' in an irritable frame of mind through being kept waiting after the ship was made fast, and not being toW when work began. QUENCHED IN TIME. Palmerstcn North, June 7. A fire occurred about 6.22 p.m. thi9 evening at Scott, Nivcn and Company's foundry in Church Street. The n]-o started in tho foreman's workshop and office, and spread to the main building, but was extinguished by tho brigade after slight damage had been done to tho building and contents.
