FURTHER PLAGUE PRECAUTIONS, On Thursday a Christchurch telegram contained (ho information Ihnt tha Mayor of Chrislchurch hatl suggested to fhe Minister for Health (the Hon. G, Fowldsj Umt special precautions against plague-infected rats should lie taken at Lyltelton, to prevent them getting ashoro oil' Auckland boats. Yesterday the Hon. G. Fowlds Bent tlio following letter to the Mayor of Christchurch :— "J 11 reply to your I pleuram of yesterday, 1 am advised by the Chief Health Officer that lie cannot recommend further precautions against plague-infected rats landing at Lytiellon ami oilier ports without general dislocation of the commerce of the Dominion, which the conditions at Auckland do not at present warrant. Some time ago district health officers were instructed to ho on tha look-out for plague-infected rats, and drastic rat regulations have been issued empowering them lo take spccial action where rats are found oil promises. Harbour lioal'd authorities aro on the alert, and aro destroying rats. In response to a Departmental circular to other local authorities, it would appear that, they, too, aro Riving elfect to the suggestions of tho Department."
