THE PLAGUE AT AUCKLAND.

A CHRISTCHURCH SUGGESTION."

ißy .Telegraph—Press Association.) : Christchurch, June 7. The Mayo&fhas received from the Health Department, in .Wellington a bulletin, dated June 3, giving particulars of the recurrency of plague in Auckland. In regard to human beings,, it is stated that ■there were four cases, under, treatment on that date, and that during the week ending May 31, Seventy-eight rats had been examined and nine were infected. The Mayor has sent the following tele-, gram to the Minister in Charge of the Health Department ■. —"ln view of the Department reporting that there are four plague cases still wider treatment in Auckland, and that nine out of seventyeight rats examined last week were infected, I suggest (that in regard to all vessels reaching Lyttelton special precautions should be taken to prevent tie possibility of any rats getting ashore. Wnen tho plague in Sydney was less severe than it now seems to be in Auckland, stringent precautions were taken to prevent the possibility bf rats getting ashore at any ports in New Zealand. The apparent indifference of the Department to protect the rest of the Dominion from a plague-infested centre like Aucldand is difficult to understand. Tho'City'-unm-, oil here is spending a considerable sum in rendering the city absolutely 'clean from a sanitary point of view, and it should.be assisted by your Department in-every possible way." ■
