A TEST CASE.

OF GREAT INTEREST. A few days ago the Minister for labour (fho Hon. J. A. Millar) informed a deputation from the Employers' Federation that it might be necessary to tako a test ease regarding the payment of overtime to grocers' assistants, who were employed oil the Wednesday afternoon of the week in which fell the King's Birthday (June 3). The Minister pointed out that the terms of tho grocers' award defined the King's Birthday as a statutory holiday, which would compel tho shops to closa on the Wednesday—the . usual half-holiday, unless overtime were paid. 110 agreed, however, to aet in tho matter on the advice of tho Crown Law Officers. Tho result of this advice is that tho Minister lias decided to institute test proceedings against any employer who refuses to pay overtime.
