His Excellency the Governor, Lord Islington, leaves Auckland for Wellington by the Main Trunk express this evening, accompauicd by one of his aides-de-camp. Mr. Guise, private secretary, leaves for the south on Sunday, and Lady Islington, with the rest of the vice-regal household, will take their departure on Tuesday. To-day the Hon. J. Carroll, the Hon. G. Fowlds. the Hon. J. A. Millar, the Hon T. Mackenzie, the Hon. li. M'Kenzie, and the Hon. A. T. Ngata will be in Wellington. The Hon. D. Buddo is in Tarnnaki. The Hon. James Carroll is to attend a social on Monday at Carterton, which is being given by supporters of the Govern ment. The resignation of the Hon. T. Kennedy M'Donald from the Legislative Council has been received by the Government. The Anglican Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Crossley), who came to Wellington to tako part in tho consecration of Bishop Sprott, will leave for Auckland to-day. Messrs. L. D. H. Whitcombe, A. Mackenzie, and W. Jack, were elected members of tho Wellington Chamber of Commerce at yesterday's meeting of tho council." Tho Marquis and Marchioness of Linlithgow are passengers on the I'. and 0. liner Marmora now en routo from Freman tic to Adelaide. They are proceeding to Melbourne for tho unveiling of a monument to the Into marquis, who, as Karl of llopetoun, was Governor of Victoria, and later Governor-Ceneral of Australia. The present marquis, who was married in April to a daughter of Sir Frederick Milner, is twenty-four years of age. Mr. W. H. Alack, manager for the Press Association, is confined to his bed with a, very severe cold. It is cxpcctal to bo & week or two before lie recovers.
Mr. Win. Price, member for Albany in the West Australian Parliament was a passenger from Sydney by the lilimaroa yesterday. The visitor is a brother of Mr. Charles Price, of Wellington.
Captain G. G. Smith, Royal Naval Registrar, has for presentation to Mr. ,1. Robinson, of Newtown, a licyal Naval Reserve long-service medal—the first to be presented in the Dominion.
The Tasmanian Cabinet has selected out of 38 applicants Mr. George Wishart Smith, general manager of the Midland Railway Company, of West Australia, to fill the position of sole Commissioner ot State Railways of Tasmania. Mr. Smith submitted his application on the eve of his departure for London to view the Coronation celebrations, and upon his arrival in London reported himself to the Agent-General. He is 41 years of age, and has had 23 years' railway experience in every department. He has occupied ■the position of general manager of tho Midland Railway Company for the past twelve, years. This position at present carries with it a salary of ,£llsO and quarters.
The Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford) is to undergo an operation for appendicitis. It will probably be performed to-day by Dr. Collins.
Dr. F. J. Scott, of Dunedin, was yesterday appointed by the Christ'cluirch Charitable Aid and Hospital Board superintendent of the Christclmrch Hospital. There were twenty-ono applications. —Press Association..
There arrived at Auckland on Sunday Professor Walter Thomas Mills, M.A., an American lecturer, who comes at the invitation of tho New Zealand Trades and Labour Council, and gives a series of lectures throughout the Dominion on economic questions. Born in a hunter's cabin in the Adirondack mountains of New York, Professor Mills worked for wages when he was eight years old, and was permanently away from liome as a farm-hand when lie was thirteen. He worked his way through college and has tho .Master's Degree both from tho Oberin College and from Woostcr University. All his life ho has been a writir, lecturer, and teacher on political and historical topics.
