"They were all talking about me in tlipj carriage and I made up my mind to clear out and let them have the carriage to themselves," explained a bleeding and mud-bespattered man who was picked up yesterday afternoon after jumping off a train in'the Parnell Tunnel. This explanation was made to Constable Gourley who had-been called by a railway gang working in the centre of the Parnell Tunnel. The "foreman of tho gang told tho constable that when the passenger train which was duo to reach Auckland at 2.31! p.m. was passing through the tunnel, ho raw tho man who was standing on tho platform of a carnage make a deliberatejump off the train. He fell clear, and the surfacemen ran to his assistance and carried him to the end of the tunnel. He. was bleeding from a slight wound in tho forehead and was in a. dazed condition, -Vskcd for an explanation the man told tho constable that they wero talking about him in Hie carriage and ho made up his mind to leave the carriage to themselves. Pressed to state what was said about him, he replied: "I didn't hear what: they said, but 1 saw them speaking, and I know they were talking about me." While the man was being questioned a train, from Auckland made its appearance, and the man, who was very, nervous, became quite excited nnd tried to cross the line in front of the approaching train. The constable had to use considerablo force to prevent him from getting on the lino. He was quite sober and boro no sign or smell of liquor. He stated that he had been working at Te Kuifi for some time nnd the men lie was working with were always accusing him of jumping up in bed at night and shouting out in n loud voice. They had advised him to take a holiday. The unfortunate fellow will be medically examined with a view to his- being confined in a mental hospital. At the time the constable took charge of him he had in his possession a bank book, two cheques, and .CM (is. 3d., the whole representing about ,!!80 in money.
