TROUBLE IN SANTA CRUZ ISLANDS. By Telecraph—Press Association— Copyricbt (Rec. Juno 5, 9.20 p.m.) Sydney, Juno 5. The steamer Kulambangra has brought news of the outbreak of native hostilities against the French missionaries in Hio Santa Cruz group. The natives attacked the station, and (hough tho whereabouts of the missionaries is unknown, they apparently escaped. A party from the steamer found hundreds of poisoned spears sticking in the sido of tho station buildings. The Santa Cruz Islands aro situated between the Solomon Islands and the New Hebrides Group. Tho natives aro Melanesians, and are mostly adherents of the Melanesian Mission. The principal trade is in copra. These islands, together with the Duff and Reef Group?, Cherry, Mitre, and Tucopia Islands, were in 1898 included in tho British Solomons Protectorate, and aro now subject to the regulations under which that Protectorate is administered.
