TOO MANY HOLIDAYS.
CORONATION WEEK ANOMALY. It was pointed out to tbn Minister fof Lnbour (the Hon. J. A. Millar) by a deputation from Die Employers' Federation, that under tlio Arbitration Court awards, in tho cafe of certain trades, a curious position would ai'i>"o as to the holidays to be observed during Coronation week. The drivers, grocers, butchers, and some of the branches of the. printing trade would be bound to observe the Princo of Wales's Uirthclay (June 23). In tho case of the grocers a half-holiday would also have to be kept during the week; and if Coronation Day was also to l>e observed, it would mean, for grocers, closing on two mid a Imlf days of tho week. In tho case of the other trades mentioned, two holidays would be required. It was suggested by the deputation that a "Governor's Proclamation" should be issued naming Coronation Day as the day to be generally observed. This, said Mr. Prior, secretary to the federation, could bs dono under the Act. Tho Minister said that if the power to do this existed he would bo favour- ' Tlio Hon. C. • M, Luko said that nil industries would be compelled to observe n holiday on the Prince of Wales's Birth, day, as things stand at present.
