OTAKI R.C. WINTER MEETING. THE FIRST DAY. RAUKAWA CUP EVENT WON BY GUNBOAT. Saturday was tho opening day of the Winter meeting of tho Otaki Racing Club, and the racing was favoured by fine weather. Being a public holiday, with excellent fields, and practically no opposition, a record crowd from north and south ' attended the meeting. Both outside, and insido enclosures were densely packed, and a record sum, considerably over .£13,000, was put through tho machines. This is nearly more than was handled at tho sauio meeting last year. Tho total would havo been considerably augmented had there been more selling windows, but, possibly, a huge crowd had not been expected, and so (as has been the case with all clubs since the bookmakers were barred) large sums were shut out in nearly all (lie races. The events were got otf well to time. Recent form worked out well in tho two open events, when Gunboat, who had run second in the Connolly Handicap, scored in good style in the Cup,, and Faunus, winner of tho Flying event at Wauganui, won the corresponding race at this meeting. Both open races, the hurdle race, and the final hack raco, wero productive of splendid finishes, and tho club's handicapper, Mr. J. H. Pollock, came in for liear/y congratulations. He stumbled badly once, but was not passed, and won fairly comfortably from tho poor lot opposed to him. Lady Mildred got caught in tho tapes at the barrier, and W. Ryan had his face Tathcr severely cut. Kingswell showed any amount of paco in the early part of the race, but ho tired badly, and, with a. little further to go, would have been placed third. Otaliu was not seen in the early part of the race, but he finished well, and should improve. A big field lined up in the Flying Hack Handicap, the start of which was delayed for sonic time by several horses proving rather fractious. Mr. Cameron, however, was equal to the occasion, and eventually sent the field off in good line. Parewanui was the first to break loose but, after a couple of furlongs, Longstep joined him, and soon led the way. Across the bottom, Long Tom ran into second place, but was unablo to supplant the leader, and retired when the straight was entered. Varna then came on the scene but, though ridden right out, could not reach Longstep, who won, all out, by .half a length. Undecided was a fair third, just clear of St. Bees. Passive scored decisively in the Hack Hurdles, which event was reduced to a flat race through several of the fences being knocked down in the first round. This suited (he black mare to a nicety, as she had 100 much paco for the others on tho flat. Whiteslone, one of the well-backed division, ran very badly, but Mallet put up a good fight and, got. to within half a length of Ihe winner at the finish. To Rui was a bad third, and the remainder were tailed off. The Kaukawa Cup proved to be one of tho best races ever witnessed at this meeting, and incidentally gave Gunboat a chance to show his worth. From a fuir

start lilies, Deploy, ami llulga Bill were in the leading division as tho largo field swept down tlip straight for the first time. Down Hie back no changes were made in the front division, but - the back ones were chopping and changing a good deal. At Ihe half-mile Memo Zealand joined the leaders, and llulga Bill was twice stopped when he tried to gel through. Gunboat had been lying handy at this juiicl'urc and, as they took the turn for home, he van up on the outside. Bliss then compounded, and Jilerric Zealand was just clear of llulga Hill, Gunboat now put in a great run mid, in a splendid finish, beat Merrie Zealand by a head, with llulga liill a couple of lengths away just clear of liliss and Woodhey, wilh First Consul next. Vibration was scratched.. For six furlongs the mile Hack Handicap was a good rate but, at Ihe finish, the placed horses, ran away from the field. Voca made the running for six furlongs when Projeclile caught her, and Cork also passed her a little further on. At the turn Lady Volley was in third place, bill she stopped badly. Merrio .Emerald then came on and, in the final furlong, t'he placed horses ran clean away from the others. Turna was last all the way, and seemed unable (o hit. out. Beacon was prominent for half the journey when the pace troubled hint and he fell back. The second event of the double proved another exciting race, and resulted in a liead victory for Faiinus from St. Toney, with Tumut, Bracken, Mon Ami, and British Maid all close up. There was a lot of trouble, at the barrier, but ('he tapes flcfr up to a good start. At the end of a furlong St. Toney and Mon Ami were just clear of Faunus and Tumut, with the others close up. The field, bunched beforo the turn, which St. Toney and Faunus negotiated best, while Hon Ami swung wide. In a neck-and-neck race over the final furlong Faunus got up in tho last stride, and won by the narrowest of margins. It was a splendid race and tho largo crowd present demonstratively shouted their approval of it. Aruake, who had shown winning form at Wanganui, was the punters' choice in tho Birthday Welter Handicap, and once more the favourite was downed. Septimus took charge when the tapes went up, and led down the back stretch from the favourite with the remainder of the field handy. This order was maintained till the straight was entered, where Septimus came back to the field. The leader, running wide b little, carried the field out with the exception of Stourton, who got through on the fence. At the distance .Septimus and Aruake were in trouble, and the issue looked to 'be between Sam Pan and Stourton, but St. Brandon put in a fine run, and cut down the leaders, winning by a bare length, while Rongomau reached second place just on the post. Sam Pan was just ahead of Stourtoit. SECOND DAY'S RACING. THE ACCEPTANCES.
