Reciprocity question is expected, when a Free List Bill may bo offered as an amendment to Reciprocity, with the object of embarrassing tho Democrats. President Taft is using his influence, with tho Republicans in tho hope of being ablo to avoid tho offering of an amendment which would likely wreck tho Bill. Daily conferences are being hold at (ha White House. Mr. Taft is confident the Senate will pass tho Reciprocity Bill if amendments aro not offered. Democratic Senators aro ready to reject a Free List Bill amendment if certain Republicans undertake not to stifle tho Free. List Bill in its committee, stage, thus preventing the Democrats from recording a straight vote for a, frco list Tor meats, flour, and agricultural implements. But Canada would not agree if tho United States now frep-list these commodities, Tho "all favoured nation" provision would benefit Argentine meats, and Australian mutton would be allowed (o cuter, to tho consequent injury of the American farmer. SPEECH BY MR. TAFT. THE SOURCE OF OPPOSITION* (Rec. Juno 5, 0.15 a,m.) New York, Juno 1. President Taft, addressing the Western' Economic Society, at Chicago, said tho opposition to Reciprocity did not como from tho American farmer, but from tho lumber and printing paper manufacturers. He asserted that the farmers wero being "buncoed" at the instance ef special interests. Tho fate of Reciprocity did not rest with the Sennte, but with tho American people. He believed the real opposw tion to Reciprocity was exaggerated with a view to influencing votes in the Senate. Ho would be, .surprised if, in six months' time, any opposition remained.
