WHAT DID MR. POOLE, M.P., SAY?
PLEA OF MIS-REPORTING. (By Teleeraph.—Press Association.) Invercarnill, Juno 2. In reference to a statement by Mr. Pcole, M.P., that, in regard to his references to Waihi recently, ho was mis-re-ported by the "Southland Times," that paper says: "Mr. Poole was reported to havo said: "Waihi, at ono time, was a queer place, and it was not safe for a woman to walk the streets there. Tim expectoration was dreadful, and rudenesa was rampant. Under iNo-Lictnse sucn abhorrences had vanished, and now Waihi was one of tho cleanest and prettiest towns in New Zealand, and was as safe as Invercargill in reaffirming No-Licenso at tho forthcoming elections.' Our reporter maintains that this is an accurate account of what Mr. Pcole said, except' that he mentioned that tho danger to women was at night. Our reporter also states that Mr. Poole, continuing, cast a serious reflection on a member of a bank at Waihi, which, if published, would have laid tho paper open to a chargo of libel."
