MEAT INSPECTION.
AUSTRALIAN SYSTEM FAILS By Teksraph-Prcss Aseociatton-Copyrient Sydney, June 2. Meat exporters are gravely dissatisfied with the Commonwealth, supervision of trade. It is stated that the officials administering the regulations are not conversant with tho trade, and that the instructions issued to the inspectors are not practical and are impossible of enforcement. In this State there are two veterinary surgeons and sis lay inspectors. It is impossible for tho handful of officers here to carry out the requisite inspection, and a great deal of meat goes away practically uninspected. The authorities issue a certificate that the meat is fit for human consumption, tho certificate stating that ante-mortem and post-mortem veterinary inspections have been made. A Commonwealth inspector is stationed at only one country killing works. It is also said that tags, stating that veterinary inspections have been made, aro signed by tho lay inspectors, who have not the requisite qualifications. It is considered that the staff should be controlled by a man who has veterinary qualifications. The New Zealand system is mentioned as tho 6tandar,d.
