MASTERTON LICENSING CASE
WOMAN SENT TO GAOL. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, Juno 2. In tho Magistrate's Court at Masterton to-day, before -Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M., Emily Haviiand was charged with a breach of tho Licensing Act in having kept liquor for sale in a No-License area. Sergeant Millar prosecuted, and Mr. C. A. Pownall appeared for the accused, who pleaded not guilty. The evidence for tho prosecution was to the effect that tho house occupied by aocusd had been watched, and men hnd'beon seen going in and out at all hours, apparently in a stato of intoxication. A search of tho house revealed a bottle of beer under a mattress, and, in a 6quara hole in the (loor, under the linoleum, were discovered eight bottles of beer, and two bottles of whisky. Tho defence sought to 6how that the beer and whisky had been secreted under the floor by accused's husband, ivjio had previously been convicted for sly grog-sell, ing.
