That particular section of the Education Act, which provides that a ,C for X subsidy shall bo paid! oil 'voluntary contributions tc tilt- funds : of secondary schools only, has been tho subject of considerable comment recently, nnd (hero is a growing feeling that the primary schools should also be included. The matter came up at tho last meeting of the South Canterbury Education Board—it had previously been discussed by the board—when the following resolution was unanimously adopted:— "That the attention of the Minister for Education bo drawn to the injustice arising out of Section 100 of .tho Education Act, because subsidies are payable on contributions to District High Schools, and not on contributions to other public schools; and that, in order to encourage school committees and others interested to raise funds for the benefit of their schools the Minister be requested to have the Act amended in the direction of making these subsidies available for all public schools." During the discussion, it was pointed out that in South Canterbury there had been some very striking examples of w.hat committees and parents of pupils had had to do to raise funds. There was no reason whatever, ,it, .was contended, for any distinction being.'lnado'. between District Kigh Schools, and ordinary public schools. The Geraldine School, while a District High School, received subsidies, but now, though the attendance was much larger, and the school quite as important, no subsidy was allowed on the contributions. Copies of the above resolution are being forwarded to all education boards throughout the Dominion.
