At. the Australian Jockey Club's Birthday meeting, the New Zealand-bred llautapu (Mitiora— Lady Sarah) ran second to Dioritc in the Rawhvick Steeplechase. Only the two finished. FIVE HORSES FALL. (Kec. May 31, 1.5 a.m.) Sydney, May 31. Five out of six horses in the Randwiek Steeplechase foil. Hatupu's jee'key remounted. Two of the jockeys were injured. ELLERSLIE TRAINING, (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, May 31. There was no work of importance on the flat this morning, but there was a fair bit of jumping. Ribstone Pippin (Telford) and The Native (Young) covered a round of the schooling hurdles, tho latter pleasing most. Paisano (Thompson) jumped five hurdles, making a faulty jump at the fourth; otherwise he fenced well. Don Quex popped over a couple of hurdles in good style. Castle Blauey and Highlander went a round of the hurdles, the latter falling at the fourth. Ho was afterwards remounted and got over safely. Castout (Levy) and Tofbelle (Hall) jumped the big fences on tho flat, fencing in good style. The arrivals of yesterday were out, and did useful tasks. ■ Flynn, who was injured yesterday, is still suffering pain, but doing as we'll as can bo expected. NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Bv Glexcoe.] The Dunedin Jockey Club's winter meeting commences to-morrow. On Saturday there will be racing at Ellerslie, Otaki, and Dunedin. The South Wnirarapa Trotting Club's meeting also .takes place on that day. Polymorphous was recently operated on for his throat affection by Mr. Edgar, veterinary surgeon. If all 'goes well, tho Multiform horse will race asaiu in the spring. It is probable the Auckland-owned Lady Frances, who has been in Palmerston since tho April races, vvill visit Signor next season. Fond Memory, whose previous racing essays have been confined to the flat, has joined the jumping brigade, i.nd is now an inmate of T. Lloyd's llarton stable.
There are no changes of iny note in connection with the market on "the Great Northern Hurdles. Paisano <still retains his position as favourite, and there is little chance of his being deposed before Iho final hour. Tho son of Strowan is doing a lot of jumping, and Jones, his trainer, is evidently content to prepare him this way, and not to gallop him. When schooling yesterday morning he made one faulty jump, but this need iot 1 e considered, as the horse" went ilone, and all horses jump better in company. W. Young, who has ridden him in most, of his races over sticks, used to say that the first fence was. the horse's only trouble, and if. ho got over that safely, he could always bo relied upon to finish the course. The pilot in i;uestion held the opinion that the horse went too fast at the initial obstacle, '• and this often caused him to get under it lefore taking off.
The Flying Track Handicap at Otalci looks like furnishing a very interesting raoe, and ono very difficult to win. Undecided, one of the top weights, is such a greiit finisher that he will probably start favourite, but he will encounter some very strong opposition from Boronia, Perceler, Parcwanui; Merrie Goer, and Ambergris.
One of tho Otaki stewards, who was.in Wellington yesterday, stated that the club will keep a sharp look-out on Saturday and Monday for any rider guilty of malpractice of any kind. No loose methods will be tolerated.
T. Pritchard icccived a. wire from H. Hickey yesterday, asking lim to fill the vacancy at Ellerslie caused by 'he accident to F. Flynn. Tho Hutt horseman will leave by the Auckland express today, and will ride Whakaweira and Lord Possible in their engagements at the Auckland Racing Club's meeting.
■ The ex-Auckland jockey, W. J. Porter, who now rides in Melbourne, was on the winner of a Jumpers' Flat Race at Bacchus Marsh on Thursday last.
' Among the recent winners in Melbonrno was the New Zealand-bred filly My Nance, by Gluten or Soult from Helen M'Gregor.
C. Cress will ride Bully in the Great Northern Hurdle Race, and E. Thompson will have the mount on Paisano in the same event.
. While Wee Olga was working at Ellerslie on Saturday, the bit of nor bridle broke, and her rider (J. Buchanan) was thrown to tho ground, but, fortunately, 'escaped serious injury.
News from the south records the death of Castashore (Castor—Zip), on whom G. Trice won the Manawatu Cup in 1898.
F. Weston, who took First Barrel to tho Wanganui Steeplechase meeting, returned to Auckland on Tuesday with a brother to the Highden two-year-old Bronze.
The New Zealand mare Cmcinclln, who has been spelling at Heidelberg for a fewweeks, has returned (says Ihe Melbourne "Age") to her old quarters at Jos. Redfearn's, Glen Huntly, where she will as in tho past be trained by V. Pilkington.
Los Angeles is onco more among the regular trackworkers at Eiccarton.
Mr. G. P. Payne, the well-known Cantcrburv sportsman, has sold Gold Cord and Visionary, and they will probably be raced at the pony meetings in Melbourne. He has Advance Guard under offer, and the only other horse he has, Goldbeater, he is trying to sell as a stallion. Goldbeater served a few mares last season. Mr. Payne shortly returns to New Zealand for the purpose of buying a few more horses.
Glenspring is to be brought across from Blenheim by the Arahura this morning, to fulfil engagements at the Otaki meeting on Saturday.
The Wairarapa Trotting Club notifies in an advertisement in this issue that bookmakers or their agents will not be allowed on the Moroa racecourse on Saturday, June 3.
Tho Otaki Maori Racing Club are holding their Winter meeting on Saturday and Monday next, on tho new racecourse close to the railway station. Trains loavo Thorndon station at 7.10 and 8.20 a.m., and' holiday excursion fares are announced.
