Tho appointment by the Home Office of a committee to inquire into the taxi-cab industry of London and the relations between motor cab owners and men lias been followed by the issue of an ultimatum by the owners. If carried into effect taxidrivers stale that it will make motor cab driving an impossibility. At a meeting of representatives of firms owning over 6200 cabs it was decided that unless tho authorities immediately dealt with the propolis of the af-sociation, for a modification of the petrol tax or adequate compensation by wnv of a revision in tho initial fares, and effective official regulations to enable proprietors to collect the "extras" to which they were legally entitled, a charge should be made against the motor cab drivers of an amount equivalent to the motor spirit duty (namely, Hd. per »allon), and a notice, calling tho attention of passengers to the fact that extra faros are not legallv chargeable unless registered upon the taxi-meter should be placed in a conspicuous positiou in each motor .cab,
