DUTCH PEARLERS SEIZED.
ALLEGED POACHING AT BROOME. By Telcer.iDli—Press Association-Copyrisht (Rec. June 1, 0.45 a.m.) Perth, May 31. The gunboat Gayundah has towed into Broome two pearling schooners—the Harriet and the Firhum—flying the Dutch flag. The vessels, which have been handed over to the Customs authorities, were seized for alleged pearl poaching. THE GOVERNMENT'S INTENTIONS. (Rec. June 1, 0.45 a.m.) Melbourne, May 31. Tho Minister for Customs, Mr. Tudor, in explaining the seizure of tho schooners, says that for a considerable time the Customs Department has been closely watching the visits of foreign vessels to the West Australian coasts without authority or recognition of the law. Some of the vessels have been engaging in pearling and other'fishing. They were manned by Eastern crews, and, besides the loss to the revenue through their failure to pay duty on dutiable goods, there was a danger of the introduction of contagious diseases by undesirable aliens. It was therefore decided that the gunboat should patrol the coast from Thursday Island to Geraldton. The Minister has not yet decided what to do with tho captured schooners.
