VICE=REGAL MOTOR SMASH.

__—o LADY DUDLEY'S NARROW ESCAPE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Oopyrieht (Rec. May 31, 8.40 p.m.) Sydney, May 31. Lady Dudley, wife of the GovernorGeneral, tho Earl of Dudley, had a narrow escape, while taking her daily drivo in a fifty horse-power Daimler motor-car this afternoon. The chauffeur, who was tho only other occupant of tho car, attempted to cross between two trams running in opposite directions in Oxford Street, under the impression that one was about to stop at a non-stop street. Realising that a collision was inevitable, the chauffeur swung tho car partially round between the trams, and tho j tram-drivers at tho same time eased off speed. , The car was struck by one tram smartly, and tho other tram >jammed it up between the lines. The glass and woodwork of the motor was splintered and scattered over Lady Dudley, who was luckily only slightly bruised and shaken. She showed gTea.t coolness and nerve in a perilous position. She declared herself unhurt, and said she considered the accident unavoidable. Lady Dudley returned to Government House in a cab. But for the chauffeur's action in swinging the car round, and the trams easing, the car would have been cut to pieces. The two windows and the woodwork were' smashed, but otherwise the damage was not serious.
