WRITERS, WARRIORS, STATESMEN.
WHICH WIELD THE INFLUENCE?
Rather an interesting note is sent by our Shannon correspondent. Ho states:
Fourteen speakers took part in the- proceedings of the local Literary and Debating Society on Tuesday evening in tho Druids' Hall, when the subject of debate was: "That the writer has had a. greater influence on mankind than tno warrior or statesmen." The Rev. Mr, Palmer, the Rev. Mr. J. R M'Kenzie, and Mr. W. H. Gunning advocated tho claims of tho writer, tho warrior, and the statesman respectively. Other members who contributed to, tho discussion were: Messrs. Exall, Tramcr, M'Millan, Murdoch, Gardiner, Barclay, Clayton, Logan, E. Law, Hensnian, arid Selby. The Rev. Mr. Palmer and the Uev Mr. M'Kenzie especially made excellent' speeches, and tho other speakers, taking their cue from the leaders, contributed very materially towards making the debate a keen one. About 80 votes altogether were cast, tho writer coming out on top, with tho warrior closely in attendance, and tho statesman a somewhat indifferent last. There was no second ballot.
