RUGBY FOOTBALL. WELLINGTON UNION MEETING. THREE PLAYERS ORDERED OFF. TWO SUSPENDED. SCHOOL FOOTBALL.SCHEME. A meeting of the Management Committee of' tho Wellington Rugby Union was held Inst night. There were presentsMessrs. S. Brown (chairman), \\\ Perry, E. 0. Hides, W. Hardham, E. Little, J. Burns, W. I'. Hornig, and W. G. Talbot (secretary). A report was received from the subcommittee appointed to wait on the Schools' Union in connection with school football. Mr. I'errv, on behalf of the sub-committee, statejl that the suggestion was to arrange for a sixth-class competition for Saturday afternoons and, in addition, a morning competition. The sixth-class competition would be open to all boys under 151 years of ago on April 1, each club willing to enter a team to be presented with a football. The morning competition would be_open to all colleges and primary schools, the ago limit to bo 14 years on April 1.-On tho motion of Mr. Burns it was decided to take steps to set the sixth-class competition going before the-end of the present season, and to circularise all schools in connection with the morning competition. Mr. W. T. Parata wrote stating that the Maori team which had toured Australia and New Zealand last year was arranging ft few matches in tho North Island, and asked if the Wellington Union would grant the team a match on August 19. The terms proposed were that the Maori team should receive GO per cent of the gate, and pay travelling expenses, while the Wellington Union would pay advertising and gate-keepers.—lt was decided to ask Mr. Parata if the team had permission from the New Zealand Union to travel, and if he would forward lull particulars of the proposed tour. Mr. R. A. Evensen, referee in the Fo-ncke-Oriental junior match, reported having ordered two Poncke men off the held —one for being incapable of playing on account of drunkenness, and one for using improper language. The player (Hamilton) concerned in the improper language charge attended, and admitted the offence. -It was decided that he bo suspended until the end of the season.. As regards the other player, it was decided to suspend him until ho appeared beiore the union. . Mr. Condor, referee in tho AthloiicOricntal senior match, reported having ordered an Athletic player off for striking an opponent—The player referred to attended before tho union,-and denied the allegation of striking.—lt was decided to hold the matter over until the referee attended before tho union to support the charge. The secretary of the New Zealand Union forwarded tho fixtures arranged for the North Island and South Island country repressntative teams. The fixtures included North Island country tram v. Wellington on Wednesday, August 9, and North Island country v. South Island country, at Wellington, on Saturday Au"ust 12.—1t was decided to accept the AVcduesday date, but, before accepting the second date, inquiry is to be made as to whether the usual North v. South fixture is to l>e played at W eilington this year,' and. if so, on what date. In connection with the Coronation procession the sub-committee reported what had been done at the meeting with the Mayor last Thursday. It was decided to call a general meeting of football clubs at an early date, and to ask the Mayor, to address the meeting on the question of footballers taking part in tho procession in uniform, as it was considered that, it other Sports bodies took part, the Itugby rcprcsentatives should not bo behindIntimation was received that tho sth (Wellington) licgiment intend holding a military tattoo on Coronation night if permission could be obtained .to hold .it on Athletic Tark. Tho object of tho tattoo, is to raise funds to start a.band, and generally to further the new defence scheme. '" : ' ' " - The Petone Football Club wrote drawing attention to the confusion that arises at -Athletic Parle when, tho referees on No. 1 and No. 2 grounds have similarsounding whistles. It was decided to refer the matter to the Wellington Referees' Association, with a view to ascertaining if that body can find a way of obviating the difficulty. Selwyn Football Club asked permission to withdraw its fifth-class team from tho competitions. The withdrawal .of tho team was approved. The newly-formed Pahanraiini Club wrote stating that they would be glad if some of the city clubs rould see their way to send out teams to play at Pahautanui this season, as tho new club hopes to join the union next season. It was resolved to circularise clubs in connection with.the request. .UNIVERSITY MATCH. The Auckland University representatives will arrive here on Saturday, and will play Victoria College at Athletic Park at *9 a.m. on Monday, returning to Auckland by the Main Trunk express on the same day. This season, the Auckland 'Varsity men have a particularly good Rugby, team, and they recently defeated the leading team in the championship . contest. ASSOCIATION. MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The Management Committee of the Wellington Football •Association met last evening, Mr. B. L. Salmon presiding. It was reported that as tlie result of an interview with Lieut. Barnstable, of the New Zealand training ship Amokura, an enthusiastic supporter of tho Associa-' tion game, there was every prospect of the game being fostered among the boys on board. A letter was received from the Exhibition Sports Committee conveying its suggestion that Rugby, Association, hockey, and lacrosse tourneys should be arranged for, tho tentative date for the Association tourney being June 13. The co-operation of the Management Committee was invited. It was decided to refer the letter to Mr. J. J. Roberts for suggestions. Mr. B. L. Salmon will act as referee in the Wellington-Marlborough boys' representative match, and Mr. W. Wells as one of the linesmen. To meet the convenience of the Marlborough ream, it was decided that the match Iks played on June 10, a week later than that previously arranged for the fixture. All Fifth and Sixth Division matches for Juno 10 have been declared off. The Boys' Sub-coramittee recommended that, with reference to'the protest lodged in regard to the Rangers (B)-Y.M.C.A. (B) Fifth Division match' (a case of playing a boy over age), the match bo replayed if necessary; with regard to the case of a Y.M.C.A. player playing for Ngaio against the Boys' Institute, the match to be replayed if necessary, and the player in question be cautioned. All boys' clubs aro to bo warned that players must not play for other than their own clubs.—Adopted. Tho ofTer of tho Boys' Institute Club to entertain the visiting Marlborongh Irnys' team next week was accepted with thanks. With regard to the Auckland Football Association's proposal that a Fourth Division representative team should travel to Auckland, the Boys' Sub-Committee reported that inquiries were being made as to what reductions could bo obtained'in railway fares. All Fourth Division clubs arc to bo circularised in order to ascertain the number of availablo players willing to pay half cost, of their train fares. At the previous meeting of the committee, evidence was partly taken with regard to a charge of unfair play on tho I part of a member of tho Wadestown | Club in a recent match against the Y.M.C.A. Club. Further evidence was hoard last evening, with the result, that the player in question was suspended for one playing Saturday. Lengthy correspondence from Brother Frederick (Marist Brothers School Club) with reference to the alleged incompetence of certain referees appointed for the boys' matches, was referred to the Boys' Sub-Committeo for report, Arrangements in connection with the i. visit of a representative Second Division
team to Dannevirke on Jimp 23 next were loft lo the Selection Committee for that division.
In connection with Hie senior representative fixture (Firs! Division) between Wellington and Manawatu, the suggestion of the Manaiv.atu Association, that the dale bo altered to June 22, was agreed to.
No action was taken with regard, to a proposal by Mr. T. Crouch that the association-should guarantee half the estimated cost—about .£oo—of the three performances by the .Mouutobanks, the association to receive the net profit, with no further liability in the event of a loss.
A complaint was received from the Y.M.C.A. Boy.-' Club to the effect that tho Institute fi.flh division team had played a boy over aire. —The letter was referred to the Boys' Snb-comniittco.
The secretary of the Swifts Club drew the attention of the committee to the fact that the referee in a recent hwiftsDiamonds fourth division match had refused to allow a Swifts man to come on at half-time, although the team was playing short strength. This action, contended the writer, was a breach of the rules, and they were entitled to have the match re-played.—lt was stated by the chairman that in this particular case the referee was in error. —The letter was referred to the Boys' Sub-committee. Members of the Wellington East Cricket Club met at an enjoyable smoke concert in the Hotel Windsor last, night. The senior championship shield, which has been won by the club, occupied a prominent place on the principal table, and was, naturally enough, referred to by reveral of tho speakers. 3tr. F.
