PLAGUE-FIGHTING AT AUCKLAND

In view of the occurrence ot another case of plague in Auckland the District Health Officer (Dr. Makgill) has expressed his intention to work right rlirougu Auckland during (he course of tho next year, beginning with Queen Street, and tho business part of the city, lu that time ho hopecl to have the most dangerous places rat-proofed. By "most: dangerous" ho meant places that had cellars, and more particularly cellars where food-stuffs were stored such as grain, potatoes, and bananas. He thus hoped, before next plague season, to havo tho city better prepared to resist the invasion. Ho is inviting the co-operation of owners of cellars and of business people generally. It is a very big thing, and will take a lot of time, and Dr. Makgill .seeks tho voluntary assistance of pro-perty-owners and business men instead of Wing to force them at tho point of tho bayonet to get that work done.
TWO RESTAURANTS CLOSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, May 30. Following on the discovery of plagued rats in Queen Street cellars, two resrnu. rants have been closed by order of the authorities to enable them to bo tho|> oughly disinfected and made rat-proof, Ono will bo reopened for business on Mooday. The lessee had permission to reopen this evening, but he preferred ta take advantage of tho temporary closing to have a complete renovation made. The Health Officer docs not anticipate any fresh eases, as the plaguo scasojj almost invariably ends in June.
