The Hon. E. M'Keuzie, Minister for Public Works, will probably remain at Balolutha until to-morrow, and return to Wellington towards the end of the week. Hi; is accompanied on tho present tour by Mr. H. J. H. Blow, Under-Secre-lary.
At tho request of several representatives of the Labour Union, Mr. 8., .1. Dolan, Iwristcr and solicitor, has consented to contest the iVipier scit at (he general election. Other isindiclnfes will be Mr. J. Vigor 13rnirn, sitting member, and Mr. George Nelson.—Press Association.
Mr. Allan Francis Hog?, of Wnnganlii, was on Saturday admitted by the Chief Justice as a solicitor of tho Supreme Court.
Mr. G. B. Carter, Government Meat Inspector at CastleclilT, was farewelled on Fridny evening, and received a parting token of appreciation from the freezing companies' employees. He is being transferred to the South Island. •
Mr. Lough, station-master at Johnsonville, who is leaving the Railway Service to tnfci> up commercial pursuits in ChrUtchurch, was the recipient of a number of presentations on Friday night. On behalf of the business men in the community, Mr. F. T. Moore presetted Mr. Lough with a solid leather portmanteau, a travelling rug, and a set of toilet requisites. A number of presents wprc also received by Mr. Lough from various social bodies, wilh which he has been associated.

The death (from peritonitis) of Mr. Hugh Preston, a well-known and highlyestcemed resident of Hokitika, occurred (here yesterday morning alter a brief illness." Deceased, who was 40 years, of aee, conducted n thriving business in Hokitika, and had relatives in all parts of Ihr Dominion. It? leaves a widow and a young family.—Press Association. Tho death occurred in Wellington yesterday of Mrs. Mary A. Osgood, relict of tho late Mr. E. G. Osgood, aged STyears. Dr. Lewis Bauer, an eminent authority on terrestrial magnetism, and director of that- department in Iho Carnegie Institute of. Washington, is at present visiting Wellington. Dr. Bauer is on his way to join the institute's magnetic surveying ship Carnegie, which is now at Colombo under the charge of Mr. E. Kitson, formerly attached to the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory.
