THE ELLERSLIE FIXTURE, ME. HIGHDEN'S HORSES. It has been decided that Mr. 'Highden's horses will copipete at the Auckland Racing Club's Winter meeting, and G. Price will leave Awapuni for Ellerslio this morning, taking with him Boanerges, Nyland, and Kilosteri. A two'-year-old Soult gelding will also bo taken north for educational purposes. El Dorado and Gold Circle are to leave Wanganui for Ellerslio to-day in charge of J. M'Laughlin. During the running of the HaurakiHurdles ut 'i'alwpuna on Saturday, Taiaha burst his foot open again, and is being treated to a few days' rest. Taiaha, but for the accident, would probably have run well forward in the Great Northern Hurdles (says the "Star"), and the mishap is bad luck for his connections. The Cardigan gelding Don Quex is the first to incur a penalty for the Great Northern Hurdles, and, consequent- on his win in the , Hauraki Hurdles on Saturday, will have to put up 51b. extra, which will bring his weight up to Ost. 71b. Several winners at the Wangasnii meeting have also incurred penalties for events at Ellerslie.

ELLERSLIE RACECOURSE. IBy Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, May 25. Ono of the most awkward steeplechase obstacles in the past at Ellerslie has been the old water jump, which horses not only have. to.race at at one bend, but have to take off at on, falling ground. Last Saturday the caretaker, Mr. C. N. Hill, set about improving the brush alongside the ditch, and trimmed it to slant outwards at a reasonable angle, thus making the "take-off" much better and the obstacle more easy to negotiate. However, the take-off still requires further attention, and could bo raised and made perfect at a small outlay. Another jump much discussed by those in a good position to offer an opinion, the trainers and steeplechase riders, is the hurdle in the straight at the conclusion of each steeplechase. Even up till the present this obstaclo is the usual fence used in hurdle events, and being an open hurdle is condemned on all sides, it being contended that a three-foot brush fence should be substituted, as after racing at dark obstacles through the journey horses are placed at a disadvantage, especially whim tired, at having to end up a sovero trial by racing at a high and open fence. The proposition that a brush fence should be substituted for the open hurdle at the coming meeting is being actively canvassed, and with so much evidence to back it up there is no doubt that tho A.R.C. authorities will give the matter every consideration.
