Fine but dull weather was experienced at Wanganui for the concluding day of the Steeplechase meeting. A large crowd was present, and softie splendid racing was witnessed. There was no hitch of any kind, though the races were not got off as punctually as could be desired, and the meeting was, generally speaking, one of the most successful winter gatherings got off by the club. Though the racecourse is a reserve, the club had all bookmakers kept off, and this resulted, as on tho first day, in a heavy totalisator turnover. Tho jumping was again perfect, and; in tho ■Steeplechase only one horse, Zantc, failed to complete tho course. After a short delay the Winter Oats field was dispatched on fairly even terms. Equitas at once rushed to tho front, and led Tuiuut, Bliss, and Simple*;. The Opaki horse cot chopped out at the halfmile, and Bliss joined Equitas. Across tho bottom Bliss stumbled, and St. Toney took her place, and was a neck in front of Equitas entering the straight. Young delayed his effort, and in a well-timed run headed .St. Toney on the post. Tumut, True Shot, and Vibration were in a line for third place. As on tho first day, the Steeplechase was another fine race, and went to Lovc.ll, who outjumped the opposition. At the first fence he, First Barrel, and Eurus were together, but the winner gained three lengths on landing, n feat ho repeated at nearly every obstacle. Needless to say, this proved too great a handicap for the others, and the Bulls-owned horsescored a comfortable.victory. Zante fell at the first fence, and Castout was badly left. Eurus ran kindly for Hegarty, but ho covered far more ground than anything else in tho race, and First Barrel jumped slovenly. Melologne was the favourite in the Hack Kace, but largo sums went on Projectile and Strategist. The favourite was in charge going out of the straight, and was not again headed, though several timos she was strongly challenged. At the half-mile Strategist tried to pass hw and continued the attack for a furlong. Then Morrie Emerald came up and Projectile did likewise. Over the j last 100 yards Sandy Paul came very fast, but tho favourite lasted Ion? enough to win by a length. Projectile was a neck away third. The Hack Hurdle field wns reduced by the withdrawal of John, Lethean, and Biirton. D'Nil made his reappearance after a lengthy absence, but showed no form. Eiiroco mnde the pace for a mile, when Mcrrie Lawn joined in and a , capital race ensued to the turn. Here Patrobus took charge and in the run home won comfortably. Merrio Lawn was a neck ahead of Enroco. Torbelle, who had started in the Century Hurdles on the first day, was today kept iii track company, but he jumped very badly and was tailed off the whole way. Clemain fell at the hurdlo in front of the stand and his rider, Abbott, had his collarbone broken. Ribstone Pippin was a slightly better favourito than Marton in the May Hurdles. To Whetu jumped qff in tho lead and was not again headed. Ribstone Pippin ran a sterling race, but could not reach Te Whetu. Marton was close up third, but the Hutt pair, Gold Bird and Hydrant, were well back. The Empire Handicap was a great race, being won by Mulga Bill, had a forward position tho whole way. Iranui was unlucky as in the last two furlongs she came from last to first. Sunbonnet and Vi both ran splendid races as. did the third horse Kauroa. The winner, who Iras been most consistent all this season, was neglected on tho machine.' As tho field faced the starter for the Farowell Hack it was nearly impossible to distinguish the colours of the riders. After n long delr.y tho start was a fairly oven one the first to show out being Kina, followed by Tobias and Lady Kilcheran. At the end of fpur fiirlongs,.|>inrt / was done with, and Lady ICilchcr.ih" "ldd into tho straight followed by Mortite and Amaru, with Aruake coming fast on the outside. Once fairly into the straight Aruake assumed command and eventually won a good race by a length and a half, Lady Kilcheran was just a neck in front of Gold Circle, followed by Kina and Tobias.
