UNUSUAL PHENOMENON.
AIR FULL OF GOSSAMER THREADS. By TelceraDh-Press Association-Oooyrieht Mcibourne, May 25. There has been an extraordinary phenomenon at Tallangatta, 215 miles from Melbourne. The atmosphere was full of millions of beautiful gossampr threads, which wero so numerous as to cause inconvenience. The threads are attributed to balloon spiders.
The white flake-like flocculi often seen floating in the air on a calm autumnal afternoon, says an English writer, the Rev, O. P. Cambridge, are composed of spider silk, emitted.by numerous immature spiders of many species and genera, passing through tho air on their lines, which, being so much lighter than the atmosphe>e, serve to bear them away with every breath of wind. Numerous "papers have been written on tho gossamer, chiefly by French and German writers, with the latter of whom -the subject has sometimes been treated on the basis of the marvellous and superstitious. . These lines are called by them "fils de la Vlerge."
