HEMP MILLING.

THE UNIFORM GRADING SCHEME. Recognising that uniformity in the work of grading is imperative, the Minister for Agriculture approved of a temporary transfer of the grading officers, says Mr. W. H. Ferris in the current number of the "Agricultural Journal." "This," he continues, "has already been effected. The graders, in consequence, are being . afforded full opportunity to study the hemp being produced in different parts of the Dominion, and to compare their conception the grades with that of their fellow-officers." Before the graders return to their own_ ports a conference will be' held in Wellington in order to bring about a thoroughly uniform conception 011 the part of all the officers in regard to hemp quality—the features to be encouraged and tho weaknesses to be checked. graders will also be afforded an opportunity of visi tin;; tlie most up-to-date mills in the Wellington province, so that they may become acquainted with the several development. l in milling machinery which have taker place during the past few_ years. It is expected by this'means to circulate in the various hemp-milling districts touiu ideas in regard to the best and masl economical methods of hemp-nroduction. "During the month nf April a consider ablo decline in nroductiou of hemp especially in the Manawatu district, tool nlace, owing principally to overtime worl being relinquished (due to the wiutei weather interfering with the bleachin; process), and. in a smaller degree, to teni norary'.cessation of'work owing to ths Easter holidays. . . . The new st.rin .pars have worked n revolution, owing t< their having obviated the rigidity whi'cl caused the bruising of the fibre, but can must be taken that too much play is no allowed, so that while fibre is secured frc pf bruise it. may be thoroughly stripped it is Gratifying to know that experiment are still being conducted with the object of further improving the process."
