MASTERTON NOTES.

(From Our Spccial Correspondent.) Masterton, Slay 22. The first concert (eighth season) of tho Masterton Orchestral Society is to bo held to-morrow evening. It is to bo given under the conductorship of Sir. J. Candy, and an excellent programme has been arranged.

A man named Dobson was arrested at Wanganui recently on a charge of issuing a valueless cheque tor-.£3 to a Slasterion tradesman. As tho umount of tho cheque was refunded, the accused was merely convicted, and ordered to corno up for sentence when called upon.

Tho weather appears to have mended again as far as tne Wairarapa is concerned. A light frost was experienced this morning and this was followed by a pleasant day. The sodden condition ol' tho soil will, however, retard ploughing operations for some days.

The epidemic of measles, which has attacked almost every family in tho district, and which lias seriously affected the attendance at the local schools now appears to have run its coursc.

Members of the committee of the Mastcrton A. and P. Association will hold a .tree-planting "bee" on tho . Solway grounds to-morrow. Tho "bee" was to have been held on Thursday last, but was-postponed on account of the weather. Tho success of tho Greytown Dairy Company at the Auckland winter show was received with feelings of satisfaction throughout this district. The Wairaraga companies have more than 'lield their own in tho cheese competitions at recent shows.

Pheasants are reported to bo fairly ■lipijifyo^.jji^pfu'.ts::of tho:.Wairarapa district this season. Hares aro nlso very plentiful, and sportsmen have not far to travel for a good day's shooting. At a meeting of directors of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society 011 Saturday last, a number of sub-committees woro set up and it was decided that the whole of tho directors constitute a ground committee. A suggestion b f v Sergeant-Major M'Cristoll that a physical _ drill competition for senior and junior cadets bo held in connection with the annual sports was referred to the Programme Committee. Work at the- northern approaches of Mast.cr.ton has been delayed a good deal lately, owing to the difficulty experienced in procuring timber. ' The "cold snap" experienced last week resulted in a market diminution in the quantity of mill; supplied to tho various dairy factories in the Wairarapa.. Dairyfarmers in this district have not 3 - et realised tho advantages which aw undoubtedly to be derived from rugging their cows.

Operations at the Waingawa Freezing Works will bo completed i'or the season in the course of a week or two. The output has considerably exceeded 100,000 carcasses, which must be as eminently satisfactory for the first season's operations. Tinning operations, which will employ eight or ten men, will be continued throughout the winter. The King's Birthday is to be observed ill Jlasterton (as in other townships of the Wairarapa) on Saturday, June 3. A series of winter evening tiiterfainments are being organised by the Wairarapa Calodoniau Society. The first of thest is to be held on. June S. Or.e director of the society will, bo responsible for each entertainment, and, besides providing the programme, will prcsido at the gathering.
