CORONATION MEMORIAL.
CHRISTCHURCH PROPOSALS. (By Xelocrapb-—Speeia! Correaponionl.l Christchurch, May 18. Mr. Holland, a member of tlic City Council, .who' is chairman of the subcommittee ' set, up. to consider what should bo the naturo of the permanent memorial to mark the Coronation, told a "Press" reporter that so far threo suggestions had been made. The first was tho acquisition of part of the Elmwood Estate as a public recreation ground for West St. Albans. The second was the purchase of a small block of land on tho Cashmere Hills near the road, and about a mile' and a half this side of Victoria Park. Tho block proposed afforded a .magnificent view of the surrounding country . and coastline, and was so situated that tho view could never bo obstructed by futuro building operations. Tho tbird suggestion was tho. setting tip- of a clock and chimes on some prominent Government building, possibly on the new Customhouse now in course of construction in Cathedral - • Square—although to place tho memorial there would bo to hide it largely behind the Cathedral. This third suggestion had the merit of being essentially a city as distinguished from a suburban affair, and further its adoption would involve no futuro provision for maintenance. It would also be a much more economical proposition than either of • tho other suggestions. Tho cost it was estimated would bo from £1500 to £2000 and ho believed that a good set of chimes with a suitable clock could bo obtained for this sum. The wholo matter would be gono into \ on Monday night.
