(By- Tdegraph.—Special Corre3pondent.V ' ' ■■'■-. '.Hawera, May 18. Heavy rain " came on overnight, and a largo number'of. visitors left the town without waiting for tho concluding day's races. In the morning tlie stewards held a meeting, and decided.to carry on tho racing. It rained heavily throughout tho afternoon. Th« acceptances were very large, but owing to tho rain the scratching pen was freely used,. though the fields were up to the average. During the day several petitions were in circulation for signatures asking the stewards to reconsider the case of R. Barlow, who-was suspended cm tho first day. The attendance was.not- large, and asa consequence speculation fell off considerably compared- with the- first day. The. favourites again fared very badly, and the meeting as a whole must be one. of ; the worst backers. have ever had to deal with. , . . . ' It was raining heavily when the horses went out for the hurdles, and no time ( was, lost in getting . them, under way. Eurdco and.Zanto were the leading division passing ths stand, but down tho back Patrobus joined.Euroco, and Zanto fell back. Mallet also seemed to be going well in tho mud, and across the bottom he easily ran up to tho leaders, and coming on won comfortably. The other, pair were rocking badly, and both pot into the last fence. ■ However, the field was strung out, and nothing was able to get up to them before the post was reached. Stoujton had a very comfortable win in the Borough Handicap, in; which he took charge as soon as tho field got started, - and stayed there throughout. St. Lumsden and llerrie Emerald were his nearest attendants to the turn, but there Sam Pan and Monsieur Soult passed them, and finished' in the places. The lastnamed got interfered with shortly after tho start, otherwise ho .would have been closer up. Bonnie Lass jumped back when the tapes went up, and lost a lot of ground. ...She was in tho rear through- ' out. There were only five runners in ' tho Shorts. Though Gay Lawless was meeting'her opponents on a stone worse terms than was the case , yesterday, , 'she was etill a good favourite. The black mare did not begin too well, but soon got to the front and led bv'two lengths as they raced across the bottom. In the straight Smilax Tan up to her very easily, and jn tho run home ho .won comfortably from Con tho Shaughraun, who finished well. . , ' .. The whole of the acceptors went to tho barrier in. the M'Eae Memorial Handicap. Mulga Bill was a good favourite, and he took charge at .the start, and led the whole way. The .'race was'a good one for Afterthought kept the. favourite hard at it' till the final pinch, when she tired, ami .Shining, Star, getting a clear, run on the fence, beat her for second place. Te Puia was well back in the early part of the race. Over the final half-mile her' rider rode her very hard, but she could only finish fourth. Miss''Advanco was prominent for seven furlongs, but she thim retired. Silva and Highdcn, the last to finish, were a long way behind.. Backers were all at sea in the Ngamutu. Handicap, when tihey made Gaby nnd Stourton their medium of speculation, and Stourton were making their second appearance on the day. The latter led off, whilo Gaby failed to get going and slipped about a great deal, finishing a. bad last. Stourttm was just dear of Avaunce at the turn, and appeared to have the race in hand, but Sam Pan, revelling in the mud, came on nnd won easily from Minora, with Silver Cluso just ahead of Stourton. Tetikura was a. slightly better favourite than Stevens in tho Corinthinn Handicap. McKihau made the early running from Sir Tulloch and Monsieur Soult, but at tho turn tho latter was the only one galloping, and won pulling up % four lengths. The favourite was kept a lom? way out of it in the early stages, but he finished well,' and was only beaten fly a head for second place. Karpara got rid of his rider at the homo turn. The rain was coming down in sheets when the final event was run, and it was a difficult matter to pick out the colours. Glenfenv was the first to move, but Taft soon 'headed him, nnd led' to the turn. Here the field:was bunched,.and a great race home resulted in a head victory for Taft, with Lady Van and Recipe next.
