P WHAT VICTORIA IS DOING. By TeleKraph—Press Association—OoDjrieht London, May 17. Mr. W. L. Baillieu, Victorian Minister for Public Works, in an interview eulogised the emigration work of Mr. H. Wills, who is returning to Victoria. The applications received during his term of offico represent 4100 persons, possessing sterling, of whom 2435 sailed or booked with capital amounting to X 192.000. Mr. Baillieu looks forward to rapidly increasing tho volume of netv settlers. It was necessary to organise and spend money in effectively advertising, and to secure nioro shipping accommodation. Personally, tho Minister thinks it is not necessary to insist on taking people with capital, if land was made available on easy terms. Every healthy man would add to the prosperity of the country, THE SHORTAGE OF LABOUR. Sydney, May 18. At the annual dinner iof tho Master Builders' Association, the speakers deplored the shortage of labour, and stated that architects wero unablo to get tenders for many works because the contractors wore unable to get men. A vigorous immigration policy was asked for.
