DEATH OF CAPTAIN MAYOSS.
OF THE N.Z.S. CO'S FLEET. ' A well-known figuro in tho New Zoa< land passenger trade has been removed by the death of Captain Francis Mayoss, who,, nntil his retirement five years 1 ago on account of ill-health, was one of tho popular commanders fjcrving with tho New Zealand Shipping Company. The lata Captain Mayoss was born at Shirley in 1855, and joined tho New Zealand Shipping Company from tho Union Castle Lino as third officer in January, 1881. ' He was promoted second officer in September of the samo year, and chief officor in Januj nrv, 18S5. Mr. Mayoss served under Capv tain Crutchley, Captain Brough, aiid Capi tain Greenstreet, and since December, 1891, when ho was appointed a commander, he had had several of- the company's lar? goat vessels in his charge, notably the liuapehu, Tongariro, and Rnahine. Dur>' ing theso years ho made many friends, and it was always a pleasure to New Zoa* landers, whether outward or homeward, bound, to'travel in Captain Mayoss'* ship,
