NOTES ON THJEIUCIXG;" "''' (By.Telegraph.—Special. CorrcspondpnM Hawera, May 17. A keen eastcrly-3Miid--v.-a.s--blowing at Hawera to-day, but otherwise tho weather conditions were perfect., The racing was good, but there was one unsatisfactory feature in the Railway Handicap—at least tho stewards thought si>—and after a consultation E. Barlow, rider of the favourite. Master Sylvia, was suspended for twelve months for allegedly pulling his mount. Everyone was astounded at tho verdict, and in all quarters it is questioned. Briefly, the facts are as follow-.— The favourite.drew No. 1 position, and hopped put very smartly. Before two furlongs' had been covered, Gray, on Sandy Paul, ran .up Jo his quarters, but across the- bottom if appeared as if the favourite on the rails had tho best, of matters. However, Gray must have bad a good hold of his mount, for, once in the straight, he ran past the favourite, and Barloiy on tho latter, evidently thinking he could riot beat him.'lookcd round, and seeing no danger behind he refrained from riding out his mount, and ran in second. These, aro the facto of- the case.. There is a rule that all horses must be ridden out, but hero, in New Zealand it is more honoured' in the breach than the observance, though in Australia it is strictly enforced. Here is the only breach Barlow 'committed, and the general opinion is that his punishment was too 6evere. It may also be .pointed out that his mount, Mafter Sylvia, has never been successful over a longer course than .five fiirlon"3- Apart from this, everything passed off well/and though a very large sum of money wns handled a large amount was also shut out. . A dozen- went to; the barrier in the Tangahoe Hurdles, the New Plymouthowned Zanto being a slightly better favourite than Waterworks nnd Puketotara. Euroco and Puketotara slipped out in ■ the. first furlong, and the former was not headed. Ho won. in the easiest manner, and got to the end of the twelve furlongs in 2min. -19 1-osec. Puketotara, Zante, and Ctemorti were- prominent for a mile, when Whitestone rushed through, but could not sustain his run, and Zantti beat 'him for second place. Mallet finished well, but will bo better suited over a longer course. Astraea was last. Several horses woro well backed in the Scurry. Tho Palmerslon North-trained Gay Lawless was quickly out in front, and led the whole way, winning with ridiculous case by six lengths. Piriwai was a neck in front of Smilax, and then camo Jackpin and Sylvanite, and Tctikura made the best showing of tho others. . Master Sylvia was a staunch favourite in the Kailway Handicap, but, after beginning well and having everything in his favour, he wr.s beaten into second place by Sandy Paul, on whom Gray rode a very confident race. Stourton, a wollfancied candidate, ran prominently to the turn, but ho could not finish with .the leaders, Bonnie Lnss finished very strongly on the outside. A peculiar feature about the running of tho winner is that Gray rode him to.victory on this course twelve months ago, and since then has not had- a ■ ride on -the St. Paul gelding, who has also failed to win in tho interval. The favourites were still on the fall in the next race, when another big dividend turned up. This time it was Clemora that carried thu public money, but he began slowly, nnd was in the rear the whole way. St. Toney and Con the Shaughraun were first off, ami leii down the back and into tho straight just clear ot Starboard, Afterthought and Floater. Con-the-Shaughraun left the fence, in the straight, and came out on St. Toney, with thb result that Starboard slipped through and "•on by a length, with a neck between the oilier pair. Silva was fourth and Auratiis, who is very much oil the big side, was last. Merrie Lawn, Tetikura, and Strategist were backed in that older in the Ladies' Purss, in which another rank outsider prevailed. Merric Lawn drew an outside position, and his backers were endeavouring to get off him when this was known. Tetikura and Sam I , an were alwavs in the van, and the latter, a finelooking horse by San Fran, won by a neck. Moahau appeared to have a chance half-way down the straight, but he tired over the last pinch. Eougo Dragoon was last to finish. . f ■ The Telegraph Handicap was n mix up from the start, and several horses hail their chances spoilt. Avniince reared up when the lapes wero released, and Bowbells quickly went to the front. After going a chain, the field got tangled up; Mortite, Makara, Draft, and Nukuhau, all. getting bad passages. Bowbells con-
tinned along at a fast pace, and won very easily. Mortito was a head behind Ambergris, and Avauaee was last the whole way. Backers got one in when Gaby ran in an easy winner in the Waihi Handicap. Ho was a hot favourite, and beginning smartly he headed Silver Bullet and Monsieur Soult at the turn, and ran in an easy winner. Silver Bullet was lucky to get second place, for had Monsieur bomi not run wido in the straight ho would liayc reversed positions with the other laraiialn horsa. The lemainder of tho field were badly strung out. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES., my Telegraph.—Press Association.) Hawera, May 17.
