The letter stated that the society would make similar grants , to all the university colleges, and the amounts were not yet lixed. Mr. von Haast. said it was too late to. do anything in the matter this year. The question was referred to a subcommittee to report. The Professors' Assistants. The Finance Committee submitted a table showing the hours worked by tho professors' assistants. Mr. von Haast, and other members, stated that the hours worked were too long for .the pay given, but no action was taken. New Physics Scholarship. The Finance Committee reported that an anonymous donor had offered a sum of £50 to establish for one year a research scholarship in physics on the following conditions:—(l) That the Government add a subsidy of <£50; (2) that the scholaTship be used to enable a student to do re-, search work at Victoria College; (3) that it be awarded by the Professor of Physics, mid not awarded unless a candidate of sufficient merit compete; (4) that the college bear tho cost of advertising the scholarship in the four university centres. The committee recommended that the offer be accepted and the Government asked to subsidise accordingly. It was suggested by Sir Robert Stout that it would not be nice or wise to seek students from other districts, and the council accordingly resolved to thank the donor and ask him to dispense with the last condition as to advertising in the four centres.
