HOCKEY
KARORI TEAM STILL LEADING. COLLEGE BEAT UNITED. Karori 5 Wesley 1 College S United 1 Wellington 8 Y.M.C.A. 3 Club' fixtures under the jurisdiction of the Wellington Hockey Association progressed another stage on Saturday. The weather and grounds were in splendid order; but play in most cases was uninteresting. COLLEGE-UNITED. The game between College and United was played on No. 3 ground, Day s Bay, and was extremely uninteresting. In the first round, United played "anyhow," but College displayed superior judgment, in the second spell, United, however, showed up slightly better, and the skipper's encouraging'"Come on, buys," •.■.'. the commencement of this spell brought some result.
Collet, per medium of Pitt, left-wing-forward, notched the first point, and, later, sent in a wide "shooter." They did most of the attack at this stage. Geo. Strack unfortunately lost an opportunity of scoring through giving "sticks." K. Thompson made a good effort, and was assisted by Smythe and "C 0.," but the- College "keeper" made a timely "save." Smythe then took ;. corntr twice-, and Fitt shortly received the leather from, a "rollin" in mi'lSeld, and, beating Hickson, passed to Geo. Strack. The latter sent in a hot shot, thus giving College a two-point lead. United now ■ pressed, b'ul Organ lost an opportunity of scoring, tho College keeper making the necessary "save." 11. Thompson was next in evidence with an attempt to score, but failed at the net. United were awarded another corner, and made several attempts to score. College finally clearing. The spell ended with thfl score unaltered.
In the second spell, after College had done some attacking, Holland (centrc-for-ward for United) made a line individual effort, but 11. Tlumpson again failed when called upon to score. "United were awarded a penalty "bully" against Gage (College right full-back), but Holland unfortunately gave the chance awav through inadvertently kicking the ball. Play continued in an uninteresting manner. United took another corner, Holland later sending up a quick hot shot, which registered United's only goal. Tho latter now began to improve, Smythe, Holland, and-others making a good move, but the last few who tackled were offside, and thus another movement ended unsatisfactorily. Andrews (United) right wing-forward, had a shot at the net, but the ball passfd high and wide. G. Strack came next with a fairly good move, the ball finally passing off a Red man and over tho line. • From the subsequent penalty corner-hit, Kibblewhite ofi'ectcd a clean "save." Tho game then progressed in moro .even terms, G. Strack pressntly coming into prominence with a fine individual effort., finishing up with a clean and steady shot that. Dwyer, in goal, had little or lio chance of saving. Tho game thus ended:—College, ,3; United, 1. Mr. Gendall gave satisfaction as referee. KARORI—WESLEY, Karori and Wesley fought their battle at Karori. The Blacks were first to attack, but Hatch made some «ound "saves." Each side soon had plenty •to do, but Wesley were tho first to open the scoring, 1). Cody being successful Another shot, coming off a Wesley player's stick, struck the goal-spost. Karori (per medium of Murphy) were also unsuccessful with a drive at_ the net. . Still another shot from a Karori forward proved useless, this time the ball coming off G. Davies's stick, and Hunter_ was soon called upon to "save" a Wnshv attack. lower (Karori centre-forward) made several attempts to score, _ but the spelt ended 1-—O, in favour of Wesley. Karori opened the nest half with more determination, and Lewer presently passed to G. Davics, the latter scoring a goal. The two sides were now level, but. owing to the strength and persistence of Karori in attack, the Bines were compelled to concede a couple of corners, and later Murphy registered Karon's second goal. The game now livened up considerably, but the Blacks held tho upper hand, Putnam finally scoring. Wesley made a game attempt to catch up, but' Ailken (Karori half) stepped up in time. G. Davics then made an unsuccessful effort to score, Murphv subsequently coming to the rescue. Karori's last goal was sccund by G. Davits. Mr. Hollis was referee. WELLINGTON—Y.M.C, A. Very uninteresting was the game between Wellington and Y.M.C.A. It .was played on No. 1 ground, Day's Eay, aud a, large score was registered by Wellington. Loader, for Y.M.C.A., opened the account, while Hollis was successful on two occasions for the other side. _ Much erratic "shooting" was indulged in by both teams for a while, and the two keepers had plenty to do. Y.M.C.A. were again credited with a point off Parton s stick—a licat s\\oV. cWwitoa aMiwvmv to bo s/igfifly tho better team far tho neKt few minutes, and Hollis and Thirkell each scored for them. They continued to press, finally "pulling to ' a little, and Parton closed a good passing movement by scoring. ■WeUington commenced U\o second spell witli vigour, and Kmullo secured t«o more goals, whilst Porter notched one also. Loader (Y.M.C.A.), left-wing, was conspicuous, a good shot at the net being saved by Morrali. Dunn was the last to score, after making a. clean sweep down the field. Mr. G. Carver was referee. OXHER city contests. THE JUNIOR GRADE. Karori easily defeated Y.M.C.A., at Karori, by 5 goals to nil. The scorers were Brooker (3), Hammond, and Hunt, 1 each. Karori's left full-back played a good game. Mr. Forrest was referee. _ United and Gregg's drew, each side scoring 3 goals. Fouhy, Schulenbcrg, and Lawrence were successful for Gregg's, and Wilson, Collins, and Smith scored for United. Mr. Kouthwiclc was referee. College B easily won from Wesley by 9 goals to 1. Cleghorn scored 5 goals, Bellamore 3, and Kelly 1. Harden was the scorer for Wesley. Mr. P. M'Kenzie was referee. Third-Class Matches. St. Mark's defeated Wellington by 4 goals to 2. Coulls and Ashton scored for Wellington. THE LADIES' GAMES. SENIOR GRADE. College A met and defeated Wellington on No. 3 ground, Karori. College were much superior to their opponents. The score was 9 goals to nil. Hinemoa defeated College B by 3 goals to 1 on No. 3 ground, Day's Bay. _ Misses M. Caldwell, Bennett, and Hardie were successful for Hinemoa. Mr. Scarell was referee. Junior Matches. Herewliini and Ramblers played a drawn game, each side scoring once. The scorcrs were Misses Barnett (Herewliini) and Wagstaff (Ramblers). Mr. Geo. Carver was referee.
