REFERENDUM RESULTS.
DISMAY AMONG LABOUR MEMBERS.
Among the ranks of Federal Labour members (says the "Sydney Morning Herald" of May 1) there is considerable perturbation over Die emphatic negativing of the Government Referenda proposals by the doctors, and in 12 out of 17 direct Labour .wate, nml i» the two divisions represented by Independents who support the Government. There is a feeling that something untoward for the Government may develop out of the existing situation, ami since the numbers vent up there has )x>en among Federal Labour inembers in Sydney much laying together of heads and anxious speculation as to what tho future holds in store. The genera) foding is that Mr. Hughes has made a colossal faux-pas, nmUias got his party into a tight comer. From expressions on the part of State and ledcral members, it would appear that .(h-c Referendum woe decided upon nioro or less hurriedly in caucus as the result of the AeUng-Primo Minister's Mrniiß personality ami insistent advocacy, mid the party are now reproaching Ihcmselvcs for not having taken a more deliberate view of the possible consequences of such an nppenl'lo .tho people. Mr. llmjhcvVWlership is not, niilurally enough, regarded as highly 'as if he had won. '■
