HASTINGS TRACK FORM. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Hastings, May 8. Yesterday, track work at Hastings was mostly of a slow nature. Fort William put up the only gallop of interest. He went one mile and a quarter on the plough with a good weight up in 2min. 18sec. The following gallops were registered this morning:—Aphaea and Mazurka ran five furlongs in lmin. -Isec, the latter finishing two lengths in front. Aphaea was going very easy. Vice-Admiral and Sunburnt finished a mile "go" together in lmin. 45sec, Te Puia and Lady Menschikoff covering the same distance in lmin. 46 4-ssec. Madam Madcap went two rounds at strong half-pace. Rangiatua and Vibration wore exercised, and Vi ran six furlongs in lmin. 21 l-ssec, Myra and' Effort' compassing five furlongs in lmin. 6 2-Sscc, finishing abreast. Appin and Castleside ran the last six furlongs of a mile in lmin.. 2lsec, and Manatau easily beat Lady Edna , over five furlongs in lmin. 4Js.cc. Gold Lace and Ariora galloped a mile in lmin. 45 sec. Fort William finished a mile and, a quarter in front of Erin in 2min. Msec. Longner jumped two fences. Royal Scotch ran four furlongs in ' 511-iscc, and Bunkum and Toanga a mile in lmin. 49sec., Bliss running the same distance in linio. Usee.. Cheddar and Wimmera covered a mile in lmin. SGsec, the last six furlongs taking lmin. 20sec. Separator alone went a mile in lmin. SO.Uec, ' and Khamsin did useful work. South East, with Napper as companion, jumped faultlessly four flights of hurdles.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. fB? Glexcob.j The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's meeting takes place to-inorrow and Thursday. The principal event to be decided tomorrow is the Cup, while on Thursday the Hawke's Bay Stakes will be run Grenadier (by Soult —Ilotcherina) was sold by auction at Messrs. Buckland and Sons' yards, Auckland, sm Friday, for 2G guineas. The pony Pairawaatu (by Soult —Lena) was quitted at 14 guineas. Tho Highden horses engaged at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's meeting were taken from Awapuni to Hastings yesterday in charge of Trainer G. Price. Mr. G. Hyde, the Auckland owner, tried very hard to win a race with Celtic since he bought him two years back; but *ach time-failure went down against the Seaton Uelaval gelding. An idea was entertained that he would win the Maiden Hurdle Race at Avondale, but ho was beaten a long way from home; and as he pulled up unsound, Mr. Hyde elected to get rid of him in quick stylo (says tho Auckland "Herald") by presenting him to an acquaintance. Owners and trainers are advised that nominations for all handicaps in connection with tho South Wairarapa Trotting Club's annual meeting at Greytown will close with the secretary, Mr. W. Armstrong, at !l p.m. on May 11. At a meeting of the committee of the Wellington Racing Club, held yesterday afternoon. Mr. .1. B. ('nates was elected a steward to till the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. 11. F. Johnston. The New Zealand-bred gelding Chivalry retains his form really'well in India. When he won a selling race with Hist, at Bombay on March 25 he ran the live furlongs in lmin. 1 4-asce. Tho well-known Hastings trainer, J. M. Cameron, is suffering from a broken thigh at Sydney, tho result of a kick when shipping Woolloomooloo to New Zealand. Tho ex-New Zealand gelding Waipuna is among the horses handicapped for the First Hurdle Race at the S.A.J.C. autumn meeting.

A Sydney exchange says that the New Zealand sportsman, Mr. Middloton Melrose, owing to ill-health, is selling his horses (including Truganini and Advantage), and will probably, settle in England. Referring to Pakau's recent defeat in Sydney, an Australian exchange says:— Contorp and his stable-mate (Pakau) "were the only horses solidly backed for tho Hurdle Race. Nonda led for about a

mile, but along the back Pakau took charge-, and remained in that position until she was headed bv Contorp in the straight. Tlio latter was first over tin? last hurdle, and won comfortably from Pakau, with the Holbrook gelding Minore. vim shaped fairly for u beginner, a moderate third. As Talcau tiiied right oif in the lirst couple of furlongs, thon made up her ground in such fashion that she was in front commencing the last seven furlong!., and finally ran out wide entering the straight, it was .surprising' that her rider/ A. Williamson, was asked tor an exnhnation. It transpucd rhat after getting over the first jump Williamson .struck his leg against the. rail, and was disabled for (lis- remainder of the race. It was unfortunate rev the _,ew Zealand mare's backers that this should have happened, as otherwise she would have probably won. One Hung certain is that when next she runs \ n .""•"'dinar}- field her price will be decidedly cramped. \\ . Young, who has been carrying all before, him in jumping events this season (having no fewer than twenfv-four wins to his credit), will have the mount on Winchester and Iteiunae in the hurdle laces at the Hastings meeting to-morrow. Armstrong, a useful member of R. Derrctts lilt-carton team, was made a good favourite in the Welter event at Humpton on Saturday, but he was badlv left at the barrier, and could onlv "finish fourth. As he made up a great" deal of ground, this form will probably lx> th° cause of Ins going out at a very short price at Ashburton on Thursday. Those qualified to judge state" that tho best was not seen of Bootie at Trentham and his supporters are confident that he will finish in front of Koyal Scotch in the Nursery Handicap' at Hastings tomorrow. At Trentham, Bootie was unfortunate, in that he drew the extreme outside position at the start. , They are a rather poor lot engaged in the Hack Hurdles at Hastings tomorrow, and, outside Winchester and bolden Water, none of the field have very muc.i pretension to winning form. Reumac, who was given a run in a mile welter at (ho last Feilding" meeting will, to-morrow, make his reappearance over fences, when, with list. .'tlb. in the saddle, he will probably start favourite in the Karamu Hurdle's. Wimmera is galloping in such taking fashion at Hastings, that it will be no surprise to find Xr. E. J. Watt's horse start first favourite in the Autumn Handicap to-morrow. That successful horseman, H. Gray, will be in the saddle. The Reckoning muse be a good sort of hurdle horse. He was entered for the Club Welter Handicap at the City Tattersall's meeting at itandwick last Saturday .week, and, carrying 9st. 31b., ho covered the mile in linin. 395-sec.. Perhaps it was fortunate for Paisano's reputation as a. hurdler that his proposed match with The Reckoning did not eventuate.
