eIBy Telegraph—Snocia! Correspondent.! Mastcrton, May 8. The M.xslcrt'ju Homing l'igeon Club held the last race of the season on Saturday, when the Derby was ilewn fronj Napier (120 miles air line). The birds did I the distance in very good time, tho firstone reaching home in 3hrs. Sniin. Tho winner proved to bo Mr. W. Drake's King Dick,, with Mr. J. Dixon's Sharpshooter a close Second. Tho result leaves Mr. J. Dixon winner of both the young bird and season aggregate, with Messrs. W. Hoar and A. Miller second in each class respectively. Medal competitions in connection with the Mastcrton Golf Club were played on the loca,l rinks on Saturday. The best card in the A. grade was that of U. Foley,; and, in the B grade, that of .1, G. Bte. Twenty-six members of the' Mastcrton Mounted Rifles were enlisted on Saturday for service under tho new regulations. The corps will in ful.uro bo attached to Eket.ahuna, which will be constituted the headquarters of the battalion. Tho removal of tho control to Eketahuna, hat not given satisfaction locally. The annual meeting of voters in connection with tho Masterton Trust Lands Trust is to bo held on May 10. Interest in Trust matters is keen just now, and. the annual election, which is shortly to bo h;ld, promises to be well'contested. Saturday was Ambulance Day in Masterton. A contingent of yoi:n" ladies occupied tho streets during the ,*>;•'• and succeeded in collec'.ing a sum of .Lm7 !r. cash. This will be dovolcd to reducing the fees' for (ho winter lectures on iirst-nid mid home nursing, ami to •extinguishing the. debt on the ambulance brougham. The-question of the charges made for country telephones was discussed at (ho meeting ol the Mastcrton branch of Urn Farmers' I'liion on Saturday. It was complained by one speaker that no concessions were made in cases where a count ry telephone was used by more than one person.
