NEWS. (From Our Special Correspondent.) CHUECH ANNIVERSARY. The fifry-fiitli anniversary of the Lower Hutt Matuodist Cnurch was celebrated yesterday. At the services throughout the clay the church was packed, and a feature of the services was the singing. SEVENTH DAY ADVEXTISM. At the llaufurly Hall, Pctono, on Fri; day eveniiy, before an audience of afcout h'ity (mostly . Seventh Day Adventiste), the Rev. 11. Cottom, Primitivo Meth°odist minister, elected to reply to certain strictures passed upon, a pamphlet recently issued by him ill regard to the teachings and beliefs of the Seventh Day Advcntists. The chair was occupied by tho Kev. Mr. Cossom, of Wellington, who told the audience that Sir. Cottom was a-duly qualified minister of the Church to which they belonged (the Primitive Methodists), and not a lay preacher as hstl been freely stated. The "Kcv. Mr. Cottom then proceeded to his printed assertions, and stated that lie had never assailed' the personal character of the Adventists, amongst whom were many very fine and learned people. However, he hoped this did not prevent him criticising freely and publicly their methods, with which he almost entirely disagreed. At the conclusion of the address, Mr. Bell (nn Advontist) put several questions to the lecturer. TRAMWAY LOAN. The Mayor of the Hutt, Mr. Bunny, called a meeting of a number of ratepayers in the Lower Hutt Town Hall on I'riday evening to dis;;ss tne best ways and means to combat tto tramway loan of .£05,000. The room was full, and those present committed themselves to do all in their power to assist in defeating the project. It was suggested that the sum of £2o to ,£3O would be required to pay for motor-cars, hire of hall, printing and advertising. The sum of .£lO was immediately promised by those in the room, and Mr. Chapman offered the use of his motor-car, so the total amounted to £2\ ss. Other promises came in by letter with apologies'for-non-attendance. Mr. J. W. Rpadi! was appointed secretary and trrooirer. The meeting Hun formed itsolf into a general committee. ~
