SCENE AT ADDINGTON WORKSHOPS
MEN'S ACT ON PAY DAY. (By Totioera'pb.—Special Correspondent.) Christchurch, May 7.' The process of paying the nion at the Addington workshops.on Friday occupied from 4.15 to close oil 6.30 owing' to the determination of the men. to count their wages before leaving the pay window. The occasion was used for a demonstration by tho men, who desire some re-; form in the method of paying out. The trouble arose through the short payment* of one man a week or two ago. j
Tho employees, of whom there are about 500, aro required to sign a pay-sheet on Thursdays, but they do not receive the cash until Friday, evenings, when it is handed to them through a litllo window! loose, or rolled in a pound note. cently one man found, on leaving the. window, that lin was 30s. 4d. short. Ho, complained of the matter, and received | a Departmental reply that the respon-! sibility for getting his right pay lay with: him, us ho should have counted tho, money before leaving the window. The men considered this unjust, but a meeting of tho Amalgamated Society of Kail-, way Servants was held, and every manj was advised to examine his money before , leaving tho window. ! This course whs followed on Friday, wicj it was tedious, and the waiting men ro-; lieved the monotony with cheers and groans for the Department. Thcro was a strong undercurrent of annoyance also,! as mam' of the men lost a lot. of time, especially those living at Lyttelton, aa they could not catch a train earlier than;! G.Jo p.m.
