A familiar figure among tlio old iden-, titles of \\ angaiiUL passed away on J hursday evening in the person of Mrs. hdward Hmes, of Taupo Juay, at the ripe, age of eighty-four years (telegraphs our special correspondent at Wnnganui). It was only in October last that, Mr. and Mrs. Hincs celebrated their diamond wedding, having been married in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1830. The latter competition is to be held at the college on Friday afternoon, Juno 2, the winner to havo tlio pleasure of reciting the poem at the Old Girls' "At Home," which is to be held on the following afternoon. All entries for the essay must bo handed in to Miss M'Lcan, Girls' College, before Juno 3. There is also to be a sight-reading competition from Shakespeare, so that there is a somewhat varied field for tho competitors' talents.

Obituary. On Wednesday, at Patoa, the death took place of Mrs. Isabella Howitt, wile of Mr. W. Ho.vilt, onoof the oldest and most respected residents of Patca. The deceased lady was born in Inverness in 1840, and arrived in Auckland in tho Pegasus in April, ISCS. Tlirco days ;later she was married tti: Mr. Howitt, who -liad come up from New Plymouth to nieet her, having been in tho* colony three years, before. For thirteen year's they lived at Sloney Hiver, Okato, right on tho borders of civilisation, and there slio went through experiences that would have daunted many people. Sineo 1878 they have lived with their family at Patea, where Mrs. Howitt lias been noted for her charity and great kindness to those who needed help. Sho is survived by a family of seven —Mrs. H.Chartoris, W. K. Howitt, A. Howitt, Wellington), A. M. Howilt, Mrs. Alban ' Hobcrts (London), Miss Helen Gordon Howitt, and Mr. Gordon M.
