NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[By Gleiicoe.] The locally-owned Mon Ami was not taken to the Blenheim meeting, but will, on Monday, bo railed to Hastings to contest tho open sprint events there. At the Autumn meeting of tho Hawko's Bay Jockey Club last season the Soult mare scored decisively in tho principal sprint event on tho opening day of tho meeting. Bandiera. has been pleasing his trainer greatly since ho went to Hastings, and the speedy chestnut will, no doubt, start favourite in tho Hawke's Bay Stakes on Thursday. At Hastings, on Thursday morning, while doing a gallop over five furlongs, in company with Lord Possible, tho once speedy Lord Soult again broke dqwn, and it is unlikely that much more will be seen of him on tho raco tracks. That useful mare Bliss is very forward at the present time, and should run prominently in any of her engagements next week. Tho jumping brigade at work on the Hastings tracks is very strong numerically, and, amongst those doing good work, thcro are Golden Water, Kiya, The Plough, Post Haste, Wirral, Pushful, Whakaweira. unci Appin. A. Oliver hurried back from Blenheim on Thursday night, and will, tci-clny, accompany G. Price's team to the Hastings meeting. No Porirua horses will be racing at Hastings. ' Though it was rumoured that Hilnriaii had boon sold, tho chestnut gelding ran in the nomination of Mr. W. M. Hallcy on both days at Blenheim, and lie is still in X. Williams's stable. P. Mason, in charge of Directniro, returned from Picton on the Aralmra yesterday and proceeded south tho samo evening. The little brown mare did not do well' on tho trip, but, nevertheless, ran a real good race in the Cup, and was unlucky not to get second place. Merrivonia was given a few days' respite in the paddock after racing at Trentham. This morning, J. Ayres is entraining tho Wanganui Cup winner for Hastings, and she will endeavour to add yet another cup to her list at the Hawke's Bay meeting, which opens on Wednesday/

The Christdiurch Racing Club's meeting takos place to-day.

Wimmora is doing splendid work on the tracks at Hastings, and, on Thursday, he easily defeated Cheddar ovei - a mile, while conceding weight to the Great Autumn winner.

Post Haste, who won the- Hawko's Bay Steeplechase a couple, of seasons ago, is at present shaping well over the. big country at Hastings.

Mr. R. Clancy, the new owner of Pakau, is also the owner of Contorp and Tho Reckoning, one of tho best hurdlo horses in Australia. Mr. Clancy is endowed with plenty of tho world's wealth, and when the match between Paisano and The Reckoning was niootec!, tho Australian owner offered to make a side-wager up to £1000 that his horse, would win.

W. Mantel has returned north with Red Lupin and Glenfern, who were among the competitors at tho Marlborough meeting. Both horses will probably be given a run at the Egmont meeting next Wednesday week. Glenfern appears to be growing more solid with every race, and his defeat on tho first day at Blenheim is now said to have been caused by a stunibja at the start of the race.

Both Jack Delaval and Red Lupin may meet at tho Takapuna meeting at the end of the present month, and, in view of the recent successes of Jack Delaval, it will be interesting to see how tho club's handieapper will weight the pair.

Mahara, who ' won the Avondale Steeplechase on Wednesday, is the horse which raced successfully in tho hack steeplechases at Trentham in the spring. Ho appears to have had the best of the luck at the Avondale meeting. The race was a good one to watch for the greater part of the journey (says the "Star"), but when it came to racing, Mahara and Cloudy Morn cleared out from tho field, and, after a ding-dong finish, the former got the verdict by a couple of lengths. Julian, the rider of Cloudy Morn, lost one of his irons the first time round, which somewhat hampered him, but, nevertheless, he rode a fine race.
