NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Tolcsraph.—Special Correspondent.) Blenheim, May 3. Tho Rivcrlands racecourse never looked better than it did to-day. A very large crowd was present to see the contest ior tho Mnrlborough Cup, which was won )>' Gunboat after a good race, hince •Uβ last meetiug several improvements luivo been made to bring tho track nnd appointments thoroughly up-to-date. Jno saddliiig-paddock has been enlarged, .is has the secretary's apartments, ami totai-isator-house. In clTecting this large sums of money have been expended, with ■tho result that the prestige of the iUnriborongh Club has been very perceptibly raised. The, racing commenced wuh mi overcast sky, but, later, the sun shone out brightly. The going was splendid. In tho Maiden Hack raco Glenfeni (11. Gray) was made . favourite, with Jo. J Maiden and several others well backed. The start was delayed for a considerable time, owing to Long Tom ret using to face the barrier, and repeatedly unseating his rider. When tho field ■ was dispatched Glenfern, Emma, and Inveran were the leaders, but-Long Tom soon moved to tho front, aud, despite the vigorous riding of the favourite, the local horse won very easily. • , First Consul' showed up in a very attractive light in the Open Welter which ho won decisively after being tailed oft in tho early stages. Bracken, as usual, went out in front, but Curator kept him at it the whole way. Aim well was checked in the early part of tho race, and, at the turn, he ran up to tho leaders, nnd appeared like a winner, but First Consul put in a good run over tho final terlongj and scored handsomely. The Hack Welter Handicap saw a good favourite -(Icel). go. under, through bn< luck. He was slow to find his feet, nnd the field closed in on him, causing him to stumble. Negative and Flashstone were first away, but, across tho Iwttorn, Astonishment run up to them. In the straight Negative came away agaiiv aud won easily. Ic*l was a good third. < Irish Rifle, St. Felix, Deploy, and Brown Trout were withdrawn from the Marlborough Cup, which was- a fine race from oml to end. The field, with the exception of Hilarinn, who was left at the post, left the mark in a line. Passing the stand there was a scrimmage, in which Gunboat and Laius were knocked back. Down the back Eqnitas and Directoiro were together, but the former was steadied, and Beacon, took up the leading position. Running across tho bottom, the field, with the -exception of Aberration and Aimwell, were bunched, and Laius ran'through on the rails. In tho straight he dropped back, and, on returning to the birdcage, it wns found" be had struck himself. Gunboat put in n great run in tho straight, .where the weight, told on Enuitas, and Gunboat won a good race by a length and a half. Beacon was just clear of Directoire, with Equitas fourth. Jfter the race the owner of the winner (Mr. 51. T. M'Grath) was presented with the lieautiful silver rose bowl which Mr. G. T. Seymour (vice-president of the club) donated to the winner. The presentation was made by his Excellency the Governor. The time (2min. B«ec.) was a record for tho course. ... Negative, who was saddled up for. the second time, was slightly .fractious at tho barrier in the six-furlong Hack Race. Tho start was a perfect one. Merry Time and Ahuapai going off in the lead. The former was out hy himself at the half-mile post, but, across the bottom, Ahuapai was taken to the front, and would have won easily,' but his rider, taking things very confidently, allowed Negative to pet within a neck'. The other pair were well beaten. I Glenspring created a surprise in the ! Flying Handicap, which he won from end to end. The favourite, Turnut, along with his stable companion, Zeninnd, and Irish Rifle, was badlv left. The ; firstnamed did well to finish fourth under such adverse circumstances. Red Lupin was going well in second place at the distance post, but s[erry Frank, finishing strongly, beat him in the last few strides for second place.- . .-.;.... ■;. ~.\" f. T There was a long delay "at "the' barrier' ,for the last race, b,ut,,tho. start..wp a good 'on?. slerry Goer- led -aba groat ,pat-6;.tp; the , turn, .wherp.Septimus collared him. Allurement and Undecided, who had been in the rear, then came fast.: and victory, rested'with Undecided by a neck.-•Merry Goer-has been up no time, and the raco should improve him.

NOTES AND COMMENTS,
[Br Glekcoe.] ' The Marlborough Racing Club's meetins -will be concluded to-day. Mr An°us Keith, who has been acting 'as starter at the different meetings on the "West Coast, arrived in Wellington by the Arahura last night, and goes on to Lonßburn this morning. Mr; J. Her stable companion, Rose Xoble, is enjoying a spell. \t the sale of' the AVaikanao yearlings last January, Mr. S. Luttrell purchased the full-sister to Peirene for 400 guineas, and the Achilles—Prelude filly for 220 lfiiiinoasV.':Both these yearlings have now been', purchased by Messrs. AV. Waipukurau Jockey Club, paid u visit to AVellington yesterday. He returns to Napier this morning. ■ Weights for the principal events at the AVanganui Jockey "Club's winter meeting are. due on Saturday next. Trafalgar has now won eleven races, and nearly " .£13,000 in stakes. Referring to the three'mile record which the "Wallace horse recently established in ' tho A.J.C. Plate, a Sydney writer says:—"lt is rather fortunate for Trafalgar that Randwick. has now its electric apparatus for timing races. Had that not bcen'installed wo should have been told that tho record was unreliable, though there may be no more reason to doubt the wateli in Mr. J. Gough's hands 'than there is to doubt the electric clock. Trafalgar has yet a'long way to go before he can hope to reach the top ef the trie as a stakeearner among Australian horses. Carbine won S3 races,'and J;29,476; Poseidon, 10 races and .£19.400; "Wakeful i! 5 races arid .EIG.GOD; and Prince Foole, U races Am\ .£10,520. Trafalgar teems good for more conquests yet and is not unlikely to'lower the total of Xewhaveu, who, when he retired, had won -E13,25-i. Abercorn, it may be remembered, won ,£12.731 Malvolio £11,214, Glenloth J:W,7U. Gladsome ,£10,712, and Lord Cardigan .£10,121." The Ulimaroa brought the racehorse Edna May from Sydney this trip.
