HOCKEY.

. 0 . THE MID-WEEK ENCOUNTERS.RATHER POOR OPENING. Lassitude, which is so marked a fc-> Inro in our Kugby and Association football matches, was writ all over Iho Wed' nesday hockey matches yesterday. Most of (ho play hardly' deserves mention. Hereawa, a new club, made a iirst appearance, and, though defeated, .showed. .soiiiD little promise. Talkers, arguers, and point-raisers wero in evidence in some of the matches as is usually the, caso witli half-trained teams. In one. game (I'akeha v. Jlui Mai) this was very noticeable but, fortunately, the referee was firm, and put down n heavy foot on this futility. Summary of tho contests is as follow:— Petono A, C; Hereawa, 0. Pakeha, 3; Hui Mai, 1. Karori, 9; Petone B, 0. PETONE A-HEREAWA. This affair was played out at Petone. In the nrst spelt I'olunc at onco carried the ball into the- Hereawa lwcnty-iivi> and, irom a quick pass, Beswick had a shot at goal, only missing the net by a lew niches, Petono kept up the attack for soino time, but Bruce (in goal tot Hereawa) was doing good' work. About luUf-way through tho spell, Judd scored a rather lucky goal for I'olono. Here nwa were now playing a hard game, getting Iho ball tune alter time, but want of combination lost (hem many chances, Half-timo was reached without any furtiter score. In tho .second spell Fotone had much tho better of tho game. Tho M'Ewan Dros., Howe, nnd Beswick got in eomo fine work. W. M'Ewan notched a goal n few minutos after the start of tho spell, Howe following this achievement up with two more. W. M'Ewan also scored again, Hereawa now mado great efforts to score. Kuch carrying tho ball right into tho circle from half-way, but it missed tho net by a couple ot feet. Howo again scored for Petono, this making his third goal. i''rom this out, Hereawa did their best to catch up and, when time was called, they were in Petono'e twenty-five. For tho winner?, M'Ewan Bros., Bates, Howe, and Beswick played well, while, foi tho losers, Kuch, Dowling, Iryiiifr, and Henderson were a good deal in evidence. Mr. J. C. Cusack was referee. PAKEHA-HUI MAI. The match l'akoha v. Hui Mai was played at Duppa Street, ami resulted in a win fur Pakeha by 3 goals to 1. In tlie iirst spell the' game was very even, each team being lackadaisical, and the proceedings pMeliy. No score had been registered at half-time. In the second spell, Pakeha put more life, into the game, and somo fine passing was the, result. The first score was effected by Thompson (Pakeha) from a fine passing rush, in which four or five of the players took part. For some time subsequently the pirno was carried from ouo end of tho field to the other, and thesa exchanges ended up in Thompson apain finding the net. Hui Mai now hat? a turn, and Bengo, after a fine forward rush, found 'the net with a hard drive, Pakoha were now playing much tho better game, and Thompson scored his third goal. The match thus resulted in a> win for Pakeha by 3 goals to 1. Mr. Hollis was referee. KARORI-PETONE "B." ■ Petone B, who are mostly new players, received little consideration for their inexperience at the hands of Karori, who notched 9 goals easily. Tho game was too, one-sided to bo regarded as hockey, ■and Petone, at the end of the game, had little- ' acquaintance' of their opponent's circle. - Karori's goals wero shot by Henderson,'.Spiers, Lowe, and Cole. Mr. Gou.-. dull was the referee. ! '.. REFEREES' ASSOCIATION. !' ANNUAL'MEETING;' , > 'The annual meeting of tho Hockey lW ferees' Association'was held last evening; 'The following officers wero elected for the ensuing year:—Chairman, Dr. K. 'C. Morpeth; lion, secretary, Mr. C. IP, M'Kcuzie: i ' ' 'Mr. Organ stated that he would bo unable to act as chairman. Hβ was already chairman of tho Hockey Association. A vote of thanks was accorded him for past services, nnd a similar voto was accorded to Mr. Turner, the retiring secretary. Mr. Falconer moved: "That referees be classed in two grades, senior andjunior, and that an examination board be set up, with a view to examining junior referees for classification entitling them to rank as seniors."—Carried. The following ivere appointed an examination board:—Messrs. Walton, Falconer, and Dr. }'£. C. Morpeth. Messrs. Carver, M'Kcnzie (secretary), and Dr. Morpeth were appointed a subcommittee to draw up a iota of referees for the' first round of fixtures. ,Tho Ladies' Association wrote asking for assistance in Hie matter of .referees. The meeting decided that it would bo unable to appoint referees, but would forward a list of referees from which (if th< Ladies' Association thought it desirable) a selection might be made.
