Under tho auspices of the Wellington Centre of the Ne\v Zealand Amateur Athletic Association a pleasant gathering of athletes was held at (he Hotel Windsor last evening, when tho eerlilicates awarded to the successful competitors at the Provincial Championship spores meeting in January last, and tne medals won by the local members of the Wellington Centre's team at the New Zealand Championship meeting at Christchurch in March last, were presented by Mr. A. They had encountered very strong opposition, but had managed to score points in all the events. Referring to the provincial championships, the speaker remarked that the competitors had shown the true sporting spirit, as the only material reward, over and above the distinction of winning, was the framed certificate of merit. He was gratified to note that among the winners were the representatives of certain new country clubs. As the occasion was probably the last upon which he would address them in his official capacity as president of the Now Zealand Council, he desired to offer his best wishes for the future, and especially he hoped that the interests of the country clubs would be carefully fostered. Mr. M'Laren added his congratulations, and hoped that the Wellington team would maintain its position at the top of the tree. A- pleasant surprise was sprung upon Mr. A. C. Kitto, manager of the local touring team which competed at Christchurch, when Mr. P. Fitzgerald, on behalf of the team, presented him with a silver tobacco box, as a souvenir of the trip and a token of esteem.
