MERCENARY PATRIOTISM.
Sir,—l have noticed in certain English correspondence Hint tho New Zealand High Commissioner is being eulogised for his prompt action in obtaining psrinission for the erection of n Coronation arch in Whitehall, under which the procession will pass. A good deal is being said about the splendid advertising medium this will be. Js it not rather "cheap" and undignified that we should be advertised in tlii.s fashion? Have we no feelings in such an event beyond tho desire of pushing our goods? We know only too well that New Zealand's interests have Iwen sadly neglected in London during tho last year or two, and, now, when every other colony recognises, apparently, the true spirit of the occasion, wo are tho only oversea dependency to adapt our patriotism (or an outward evidence of it) to such a purpose. May the tinsel and "tho greetings froni Maorilajul," and tho Southern Cross glitter and flaunt to good effect, since thesa things, at such an age, have to be.—l am, etc., COLONUS.
