The census return of the Christchurch district has just been completed, and siiows that the population is 90,400; or 8513 more than it was in 1906, when the last census was taken. The increase has been at tho rate of 10.39 per cent. There has been a decreas* in the Central War 9 of tho city, and tho evidence of the returns goes to to show that the people are moving out into tho suburbs, and leaving the central area for the business part of the city. Tho extension of the electric tramway system, and tho search for chaancr building lots, have been responsible, in a largo measure, for the rise of thn suburbs, especially in (he Waimairi County, which, is served by six tram routes. In Waimairi, the population has increased in 2913, or 27.27 per cent., while Spreydon, which is also well served by the system, has gonq ahead at the rate of 40.72 per cent., and, in Halswell, where tho tram is at the borders of the county, the progress has been at tho rate of 45.51 per cent. The contest betwean Sumner and New Brighton for tho greater numerical strength, has again proved interesting, New Brighton bavins improved its position slightly. The rates of increase'-'Verc:—New Brighton, 50.45 per cent.; Sunnier, 47.92 per cent. In the wards of the city the increases have been at a more moderate rate, the figures being: Linwood, 19.99 per cent.: St. Albans, 14.63 ner cent.j Sydenham, 10.65 pt-r cent.
