THE PATRIARCHS OF "SPORT."
A DEMISE ANNOUNCED'. (By TcJcKraph.-Snocial Correspondent.) Christchurch, May 3. Spoilsmen and others will regret to 1 hear of the death of Mr. Lawrenca Markey (better known as "Larrv" Markey) at the Christchurch Hospital yesterday ufternocn, from heart disease. Deceased was seventy-eight years of age. -Mr. Markey, who was born at Armagh, Ireland, emigrated in the very early days to Australia, liually going to Tasmanfa, where a number of his relatives have since settled, and are well known and respected. Mr. Markey came to New Zealand in the early 'sixties, and, for many years, farmed" in the Ko'-ai disrict, near' Springfield, being also a well, known contractor, lie always took a great interest in "sport" in its truest tense (especially sleeplechasing), and was Inn owner of some of the best steeple chasers in the country, particularly in the old days. One of his horses—Mou'-e----trap—won tho Grand National Steeplechase. Mr. Markey imported several fine stallions to this country, tho influence of one.of them (Messenger) improving the breed of hackneys throughout Canter.
